Arcon 12024 Battery Box Strap Kit, 42-Inch — Product description

The Arcon 12024 is a 42-inch battery box tie-down strap kit built to keep your battery box planted through road vibration and open-water chop. You get the woven polypropylene strap, a firm-grip buckle, two tie-down brackets, and stainless steel screws. Simple to install, easy to re-tighten, and sized for most standard marine and RV battery boxes.

Here's the thing about a battery that isn't tied down. It moves. And a battery that moves is a battery working its terminals loose, chafing its cables, and in the worst case tipping over and spilling acid where you really don't want it. The Arcon 12024 battery box tie-down strap is the simple fix. It's a 42-inch woven polypropylene strap with a firm-grip buckle and a bracket-and-screw kit, made to clamp a standard battery box down tight and keep it there.

Open the package and you get everything you need to mount it. The strap itself, the plastic firm-grip buckle that lets you snug it down and re-tighten by hand, two polypropylene tie-down brackets, and a set of stainless steel mounting screws. The stainless hardware matters more than you'd think. Plain steel screws rust out fast around a battery, between the acid vapor and the moisture, and a rusted screw is one you'll be drilling out in two seasons. Stainless holds up.

Installation is about as straightforward as marine gear gets. You screw the two brackets to the deck or the battery shelf, one on each side of the box, using the supplied stainless screws. Route the strap up and over the lid, hook it through both brackets, and cinch the buckle down. That's it. The 42-inch length gives you enough strap to clear the top of a tall box and still have room to pull it snug. If you're replacing a cracked or sun-rotted strap on a box you already own, it's usually a five-minute swap.

The woven polypropylene is the right material for where this thing lives. It doesn't soak up water, it shrugs off the UV beating a strap takes sitting in an open boat all summer, and it won't rot the way a cotton or cheap nylon web will. Salt spray, rain, a bilge that never quite dries out, none of it bothers polypropylene much. The black finish keeps it looking clean next to the battery box instead of fading to a chalky gray.

Sizing is simple. At 42 inches, this strap fits most standard marine and RV battery boxes, the kind that hold a single group 24, 27, or 31 battery. It's a single-strap kit, so it's built for one box. If you're running a bank of batteries in separate boxes, you'll want one kit per box. And if your box came with a strap that's gone brittle, measure the old one. Anything in the 40-inch neighborhood and this is your replacement.

One habit worth picking up. After the first couple of outings with a fresh strap, give the buckle a quick check and re-snug it. Webbing settles a little under its first real loads, and thirty seconds of attention keeps the box tight for the rest of the season. Same goes at the start of every spring when you're re-commissioning the boat or pulling the RV out of storage.

Why bother strapping a battery down at all? Because the standards folks aren't kidding about it. ABYC guidance calls for a battery to stay put even if the boat heels hard, with no more than about an inch of movement in any direction. A trailer battery takes a similar pounding from potholes and washboard roads. A hold-down strap is the cheapest insurance you'll buy all season against a battery that walks around its tray, chafes a cable bare, and leaves you dead in the water. For the money, there's no reason to run without one.

What this isn't: it's not the battery box itself, and it's not a structural tie-down for anything heavier than a battery. Use it for what it's made for, keeping a boxed battery secured on a boat deck, in an RV compartment, or on a trailer, and it'll do that job for years.

Frequently asked questions

What comes in the Arcon 12024 kit?

You get the 42-inch woven polypropylene strap, a firm-grip plastic buckle, two polypropylene tie-down brackets, and four stainless steel mounting screws. Everything you need to mount and secure one battery box.

How long is the strap?

It's 42 inches long. That's enough to clear the top of a standard tall battery box and still pull snug through the buckle.

What battery boxes does it fit?

It fits most standard marine and RV battery boxes, the kind sized for a single group 24, 27, or 31 battery. If you're replacing an old strap, measure it. Anything around 40 inches and this is a direct swap.

Does it come with mounting hardware?

Yes. Two polypropylene tie-down brackets and four stainless steel screws are included, so you can anchor the strap to your deck, shelf, or battery compartment right out of the package.

Will the hardware rust in a battery compartment?

The screws are stainless steel, so they hold up to the acid vapor and moisture around a battery far better than plain steel. The strap and brackets are polypropylene, which doesn't rust at all.

Is this strap okay for saltwater use?

Woven polypropylene handles salt spray, rain, and UV without rotting or soaking up water, so it's well suited to an open boat. Rinse it with fresh water now and then like the rest of your gear.

How does the buckle work?

It's a firm-grip plastic buckle. You route the strap through it, pull it tight by hand, and it holds. No tools, and you can re-snug it anytime the webbing settles.

Can I use it on a trailer or in an RV?

Absolutely. It's just as at home holding a battery box in an RV compartment or on a trailer tongue as it is on a boat deck. Road vibration is exactly what it's built to handle.

Is this one strap or a pair?

It's a single-strap kit, built to secure one battery box. Running batteries in separate boxes? Grab one kit per box.
