Arcon 11796 Battery Box Strap Kit, 54in Polypropylene — Product description

The Arcon 11796 keeps your battery box bolted down where it belongs. It's a 54-inch woven polypropylene strap with a firm-grip buckle, plus two mounting brackets and stainless steel screws in the kit. Acid resistant, built for RV and boat battery compartments, and long enough to wrap a Group 24, 27, or 31 box.

If you've ever popped open an RV battery compartment after a long haul and found the box slid halfway across the tray, you already know why this strap exists. The Arcon 11796 is a battery box tie-down kit built to keep your battery boxed, strapped, and staying put while you drive. It's a simple piece of gear, but it's the kind of thing that saves you from a cracked case, a chafed cable, or a battery bouncing loose on a washboard road.

The strap itself is 54 inches of woven polypropylene in black. That length is the whole point. It's long enough to wrap all the way around a standard Group 24, Group 27, or Group 31 battery box and still leave slack to feed through the buckle and cinch down tight. The firm-grip plastic buckle does the clamping. You thread the tail, pull it snug, and it holds. No ratchet to seize up, no metal cam to rust out. Just a clean, direct tension strap that you can re-tension in ten seconds if it ever works loose.

What makes this a kit and not just a strap is the hardware that comes with it. Arcon includes two polypropylene tie-down brackets, the little footman-style loops that anchor the strap ends to your tray or floor, along with the stainless steel screws to mount them. That matters more than it sounds. A strap with nothing to anchor to is useless, and stainless screws mean the mounting points won't rust and weep down the side of your battery box after a season of damp storage.

Installation is about as straightforward as it gets. You position your battery box on its tray, mark where the two brackets need to sit so the strap crosses over the top of the box, and drive the screws. Then you run the strap up through one bracket, over the box, down through the other, and back into the buckle. Cinch it down until the box can't rock. That's it. Most folks have it done in under ten minutes with nothing more than a drill and a screwdriver bit.

Where does it earn its keep? RV battery compartments are the obvious home for it, and that's the market Arcon built it for. But it's just as at home in a boat. If you run a deep-cycle trolling motor battery in a box up in the bow or under a console seat, this strap locks it down so it isn't slamming around when you're running across a chop. Trailer tongue boxes, utility trailers, truck beds, any place you've got a battery in a box that needs to stay put, this handles it. Some people use the same strap for general cargo tie-down too, since 54 inches of woven poly will cinch down a toolbox or a cooler just fine.

The woven polypropylene is resistant to battery acid, which is the detail that separates a real battery strap from a generic tie-down. Lead-acid batteries vent and occasionally seep, and a strap sitting in that environment can get eaten up over time. Poly shrugs it off. It also doesn't soak up water and rot the way a natural fiber would, so it's fine in a damp bilge or an open trailer box through a wet spring.

A couple of honest notes. This is a hold-down strap, not a lifting or towing strap, so don't press it into service as a recovery strap or a load-rated rigging strap. It's sized for battery boxes, so if you're trying to strap down something much larger than a Group 31 box you may run short on the 54-inch length. And the brackets screw into whatever you mount them to, so you want a solid tray, floor, or bulkhead to anchor into, not a thin flexible panel.

For under ten bucks, it's cheap insurance. A loose battery is a safety problem and a mess waiting to happen, and most RV and boat inspectors want to see the battery secured anyway. The Arcon 11796 gets that done with parts that won't rust or rot, and you can re-use it box after box.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Arcon 11796 strap?

It's 54 inches. That's long enough to wrap all the way around a standard Group 24, 27, or 31 battery box and still feed through the buckle with room to cinch it down.

Does it come with mounting hardware?

Yes. The kit includes two polypropylene tie-down brackets and the stainless steel screws to mount them, so you have everything you need to anchor the strap to your tray or floor.

What's the strap made of?

Woven polypropylene. It's resistant to battery acid and doesn't soak up water, which is exactly what you want sitting next to a lead-acid battery in a damp compartment.

Will it fit my battery box?

It's sized for standard RV and marine battery boxes, including Group 24, 27, and 31. If your box is larger than a Group 31, the 54-inch length may run short.

Can I use it on a boat?

Absolutely. It locks down a trolling motor or deep-cycle battery box so it isn't sliding around when you're running across a chop. The acid-resistant poly holds up fine in a damp bilge.

How does the buckle work?

You thread the strap tail through the firm-grip plastic buckle, pull it snug, and it holds. There's no ratchet or metal cam, so nothing to seize up or corrode. Re-tensioning takes a few seconds.

Is this a load-rated or towing strap?

No. It's a battery box hold-down strap, not a recovery or rigging strap. Use it to keep a battery box in place, not to tow or lift a load.

What color is it?

Black. The low-profile black webbing stays discreet in a battery compartment.

Do the screws rust?

No. The included mounting screws are stainless steel, so your anchor points won't rust or streak the side of the battery box after a wet season.
