Ancor's Pink 18 AWG Tinned Copper Wire is marine-grade primary wire that holds up to salt, vibration, and years in the bilge. Every strand is tinned copper, the insulation is rated 600V, and it exceeds ABYC and UL 1426. It's the wire we'd run on our own boats for gauge lighting, instrument feeds, and short accessory circuits.

Ancor's Pink 18 AWG Tinned Copper Wire is marine-grade primary wire built for boats that live in a wet, salty, vibrating world. This is a 35-foot spool of single-conductor 18 gauge wire, and every strand inside the jacket is tinned copper. That tin coating is the whole point. It's what keeps the copper from turning green and brittle after a couple of seasons in the bilge.

Here's the difference between this and the cheap stuff. General-purpose wire built for a house or a car uses bare copper. Bring bare copper anywhere near salt air and it corrodes, the strands go dark, resistance climbs, and eventually you get a warm connection or a dead circuit. Ancor tins every strand, so the copper stays bright and conductive for the long haul. We've pulled old Ancor wire out of boats that looked brand new inside the insulation. That's not luck, that's the tinning doing its job.

The insulation is premium vinyl rated at 600 volts, 105 degrees C dry and 75 degrees C wet. It stays flexible down to -40 degrees F, so it won't crack when you're rigging in the cold, and it shrugs off salt water, battery acid, oil, gasoline, heat, abrasion, and UV. The copper itself is Ancor's Type 3 ultra-flexible stranding, which means a lot of fine strands rather than a few thick ones. That fine stranding is what lets you route this around tight bends behind a dash without fighting it, and it's what stands up to constant engine and hull vibration without fatiguing and breaking.

This wire exceeds UL 1426, ABYC, and US Coast Guard Charter boat standards (CFR Title 46). If you're wiring a boat that has to pass survey, or you just want it done to the same spec the pros use, this is the wire. Nominal outside diameter is 7/64 inch, or 3mm, which is typical for 18 AWG and easy to feed through existing conduit and wire looms.

What's 18 gauge good for? Think low-current runs. Instrument feeds, gauge lighting, courtesy and cabin lights, small electronics, switch panel wiring, and short accessory circuits. It's not a battery cable and it's not for a windlass or a big pump. One thing worth knowing: 18 AWG has real voltage drop on longer runs. If you're feeding LED nav lights or anything more than about 20 feet away, do the math on voltage drop first. You may want to step up to 16 or 14 gauge for the longer pulls. For the short stuff, 18 gauge is perfect and keeps your harness tidy. And because the strand count is high, it takes a crimp cleanly and seats nicely in a terminal barrel.

The pink jacket is there so you can keep circuits straight. Boat wiring turns into a rat's nest fast when everything is the same color, so a dedicated color for a specific circuit saves you every time you go back in to troubleshoot. Just verify your color against the existing harness so you stay consistent with whoever wired it before you.

A few install notes from experience. The 35-foot spool is a good size for a handful of accessory runs on a small to mid-size boat, but a full bow-to-stern pull on a 25-footer can eat most of a spool, so plan your length before you cut. Every termination should get a proper crimp with the right connector and heat shrink over it. Bare crimps fail in salt spray, no exceptions. Ancor's nylon-insulated ring terminals and a ratcheting crimper are the right partners here, since a ratcheting crimper gives you consistent pressure without crushing that fine stranding. Label your runs at both ends while you go, and leave a little service slack so a future repair isn't a fight. Do it right once and you won't be back in that panel for years.
