Ancor has been building marine wire for boaters who actually run their boats hard. This is their 14 AWG primary wire in orange, cut to an 18-foot length that's sized right for accessory circuits, pumps, lighting, and shorter DC runs where you don't need a full spool. It's tinned copper. And if you've ever chased a green, crusty terminal down in a bilge, you already know why that matters.

Here's the thing about marine wire. The salt air, the vibration, the constant damp, all of it eats ordinary automotive wire alive. Bare copper corrodes from the strand out, and once corrosion creeps up under the insulation you get voltage drop, heat, and eventually a dead circuit you can't see. Ancor tins every strand, so each one carries a thin protective coating that fights corrosion and electrolysis long after bare copper would have failed. That's the whole point of paying a little more for marine grade.

So what's 14 AWG good for? Think moderate loads. Nav lights, cabin lighting circuits, livewell and washdown pumps, blowers, most accessory runs on a small to mid-size boat. For a short to medium run at those amperages you're in good shape. Push a lot of current a long distance, though, like a windlass feed or a big inverter, and you'll watch voltage drop climb. That's not a knock on the wire, it's just physics. For those heavy, long runs, step up to a heavier gauge. Ancor makes the same marine-grade wire in 12, 10, 8, and larger when you need it.

The orange jacket is about staying organized. Pick a color convention and stick to it so the next person in the bilge, maybe you, two seasons from now, can trace a circuit at a glance. When you terminate it, use adhesive-lined heat-shrink connectors and don't over-tighten your strippers. Support long runs with loom or conduit where they're exposed to sun, because constant UV will fade any jacket over a few seasons.
