Actisense A2K-TER-F NMEA 2000 Micro Terminator, Female — Product description

Every NMEA 2000 network needs exactly two terminators, one at each end of the backbone, and this is the female end. The Actisense A2K-TER-F drops a precise 120 ohm resistor onto your bus so the data flows clean. It's gold-plated, sealed to IP67 when mated, and built to shrug off years of salt, spray, and vibration.

If you've ever chased a phantom fault on an NMEA 2000 network, a device dropping off, sensors flickering, engine data going quiet for no reason, there's a good chance the backbone wasn't terminated the way it should be. NMEA 2000 is a bus, and a bus needs a resistor at each physical end to stop the signal from bouncing back down the wire. Miss one and the whole network can turn flaky. This is the female terminator, one half of that pair.

Inside the housing sits a single 120 ohm resistor, held to 1% tolerance and rated 500mW. Put one at each end of the backbone and the two 120 ohm resistors sit in parallel across the data pair, giving the network the 60 ohms of total resistance it's designed around. That's the number that keeps the CAN data readable from one end of the boat to the other. Get it wrong and you'll see the kind of intermittent gremlins that eat a whole afternoon at the dock.

Termination belongs at the two extremities of your backbone, never on a drop cable. Whichever connector is exposed at each end tells you which terminator you need. This female terminator mates to a male backbone connector. Its counterpart, the male terminator, plugs into a female port. You can't fudge the gender, so check the open ends of your backbone before you order. On a typical helm-to-transom run you'll end up needing one male and one female, one at each end.

Installing it is about as simple as marine wiring gets. Find the open connector at the end of your backbone, thread the terminator on, and hand-tighten the screw cap until the O-ring seats. No tools, no crimping, no power to cut. Building a fresh network from a starter kit? You'll want a pair, one male and one female. Extending an existing backbone and moving the end point? You'll re-use or replace the terminator at the new end. First boat wiring in a first sounder, or a full multi-display helm, it's the same part and the same steps.

The power pair is rated to 60VDC and 4A, well inside what a standard 12V N2K network ever puts across it, so nothing here is working hard. And because it's a passive resistor in a sealed shell, there's nothing to fail. No firmware, no LED, no settings. It does its one job and stays out of the way.

Gauges or targets that stutter. Any of that on an otherwise healthy install, and the first thing a good tech checks is the terminators, one at each end, correct resistance, seated tight. It's cheap insurance against a lot of head-scratching.
