Actisense A2K-TDC-5M NMEA 2000 Micro Cable Assembly, 5M

The Actisense A2K-TDC-5M is a 5-meter (16.4 ft) NMEA 2000 micro cable assembly, and it does two jobs on your network. Run it as a drop cable from the backbone out to a single device, or splice it in as a length of the backbone itself. Actisense calls this their Lite trunk-and-drop cable, and it's the same UL-certified cable and gold-plated connectors they build the rest of the A2K range around.

Inside that black PVC jacket are five conductors doing the real work. A 22 AWG power pair and a 24 AWG data pair, both 19-strand tinned copper, plus a 22 AWG drain wire tied to a 37 AWG tinned-copper braid. That braid is the part that keeps your network quiet. It shields the power and signal lines from radio frequency interference and cuts down on the noise the cable itself throws off, so your depth, GPS, and engine data show up clean at the helm. The male end uses gold-plated brass contacts, the female end phosphor bronze, and both thread together on a standard M12 screw cap. Mated up, the connection is sealed to IP67, so a wet bilge or a splashed console isn't a problem.

Five meters is one of the lengths you reach for most often. It's a clean run from a console T-connector down to a transom-mounted sensor, from the dash out to a bow-mount installation, or from your backbone over to a display that sits a little too far away for a shorter drop. Keep the drop-cable rules in mind though. A single drop can't exceed 6 meters from the backbone, and the total of every drop on the network has to stay under 72 meters. This 5-meter run uses most of a single drop's budget, so plan the layout before you pull it.

On the backbone side, NMEA 2000 Lite cable like this builds a run up to 100 meters long. If your boat needs more than that, you extend the middle of the bus with heavier mini cable and keep the outer Lite sections inside the 100-meter limit. Rated current is 3 amps at 60 volts DC, which is plenty for the network power a typical string of sensors and one or two displays pull.

A few things from years of rigging these. Seat the connector all the way and hand-tighten the screw cap before you trust it. A connector that looks mated but isn't fully seated is the number-one cause of intermittent dropouts on an N2K bus. In saltwater, put a little dielectric grease on the threads and the O-ring every season, because the male contact is the first thing to corrode out in the open air. And don't force a tight bend right at a T-connector. The jacket can split there and short the backbone. If you're powering two displays plus this run off a 12-volt system, watch your voltage at the far end, because a long drop under load will show some drop before it gets to the electronics.

Every Actisense connector follows the DeviceNet standard the NMEA 2000 spec is built on, so this cable drops into a mixed-brand network without adapters or extra resistors. The cable itself is UL-certified and the assembly is NMEA 2000 certified, which matters when you're wiring in gear you want to stay reliable for years on the water. Operating temperature runs from -20 to +70 degrees C, and it'll sit in storage down to -40, so a cold-weather layup or a hot engine compartment won't bother it. At 370 grams for the 5-meter assembly, it's light enough to route through tight chases without adding real weight to the run.

This cable is a straight fit with the rest of the Actisense A2K network hardware, including their terminators and starter kits, so you can build a whole backbone out of matched parts. Just remember it's a NMEA 2000 and DeviceNet micro cable, not a USB or Ethernet lead. If your device speaks NMEA 2000, this wires it in. If it needs a different bus, this isn't the cable for it.
