TACO 20' Carbon Fiber Twist & Lock Outrigger Poles - GS-Series Black
TACO 20' Carbon Fiber Twist & Lock Outrigger Poles - GS-Series Black — Product description
The TACO Marine 20-foot Carbon Fiber Twist & Lock Outrigger Poles (MPN OT-4200CF-HD, sold in pairs) are TACO's flagship offshore outrigger poles, sized for boats up to 50 feet running serious offshore trolling spreads. Carbon fiber construction with UV-resistant clear-coat over black finish - significantly stronger and lighter than equivalent-rated aluminum poles, and built to handle the loads of full triple-tier dredges of ballyhoo, mullet, or squid at offshore trolling speeds. The patent-pending Twist & Lock attachment eliminates pins and bolts entirely - twist the pole into the base, lock it down, the cylindrical-on-cylindrical engagement carries all the load. Telescoping design collapses to under 8 feet for bridge clearance and trailering. 316L stainless steel swivel rings, anodized aluminum collars, triple outrigger line design (3 line positions for mono or Dacron), swivel roller design for line tracking, adjustable roller line caddy with brass rollers. Locking-pin design prevents pole collapse when extended. 1.5-inch pole diameter. Compatible with TACO Pro Series GS-450, GS-500, and GS-1000 outrigger bases (bases sold separately). 1-year limited warranty.
The TACO Marine 20-foot Carbon Fiber Twist & Lock Outrigger Poles are TACO's flagship offshore outrigger poles - the high-end carbon fiber alternative to TACO's traditional aluminum poles, sized for serious offshore boats running heavy trolling spreads. TACO Marine has been the dominant US outrigger manufacturer for decades. The Twist & Lock carbon fiber line is the company's premium offering, replacing pin-mount attachment with a cylindrical Twist & Lock interface and replacing aluminum tubing with carbon fiber for both stiffness and weight savings.
For boats up to 50 feet. The 20-foot pole length is sized for serious offshore boats running 36-50 foot LOA - sportfishers, big convertibles, large center consoles, smaller charter battlewagons. TACO's matched 16-foot poles are appropriate for boats under 35 feet. For boats over 50 feet, longer poles or different rigging are needed (typically center-rigger / pinch-pole setups for big sportfishers running 60+ feet of LOA). Match the pole length to boat size - too long, the poles overhang dangerously and the spread is unmanageable. too short, the spread is too narrow to keep multiple lines from tangling.
Carbon fiber pole construction. The poles are built from carbon fiber with a UV-resistant clear coat over black gel-coat finish. Carbon fiber's mechanical advantages over aluminum at the same diameter: higher tensile strength (handles the bending load of pulling weighted dredge spreads at speed), higher stiffness (less pole flex during fights, which translates to better line angle and less line wear), and lower weight (the 20-foot carbon poles are noticeably lighter than equivalent aluminum, which matters when you're deploying / retracting the poles in rough seas). The clear coat protects the carbon from UV degradation - UV is the natural enemy of bare carbon fiber, and the clear coat is what keeps the poles looking and performing right over years of offshore use.
Pull full triple-tier dredges. The carbon fiber's strength advantage matters most for boats running heavy trolling spreads - full triple-tier dredges of ballyhoo, mullet, or squid pulled at offshore trolling speeds (5-10 knots) generate substantial bending loads on the outrigger poles. Aluminum poles in the same diameter class can't handle full dredges at speed without flexing excessively or eventually fatiguing at the base. Carbon fiber handles the load at the same diameter - that's why serious offshore tournament boats (where dredge fishing is the difference between catching and not catching) favor carbon over aluminum.
Twist & Lock attachment. The patent-pending Twist & Lock design replaces the older pin / bolt attachment with a cylindrical interface. The pole twists into the base receiver, engages a cam-locking mechanism, and locks in place - no pins to align, no bolts to thread, no holes to find. For the deck crew, this is the visible difference vs older outriggers: deploy and retract in seconds, with no fiddling with hardware. The cylindrical interface also distributes load across a much larger surface area than pin-mount (where the load concentrates at a single pin), which is part of why the system handles full dredge loads.
Compatible with GS-Series bases. The Twist & Lock poles are designed for use with TACO Pro Series outrigger bases: GS-450 (the base-tier Pro Series), GS-500 (the mid-tier with adjustable angle), and GS-1000 (the top-tier with full pivot range). The bases are sold separately - this is a pole-only kit, sold as a pair. For owners doing a complete outrigger install from scratch, you need both the pole pair and the matching base pair. For owners upgrading existing TACO bases (most TACO outrigger bases over the past decade are GS-Series compatible), this kit works as a direct pole replacement.
Telescopes to under 8 feet. The 20-foot poles telescope down to less than 8 feet for bridge clearance and trailering. Critical for boats that go under bridges (most US ICW transits, most lake / river boating), boats that get trailered (yes, even 50-foot boats sometimes get trailered for long moves), and for storage. The telescoping mechanism uses interlocking carbon fiber sections with cam-locking sleeves - extend the sections to full length, twist the cam locks, the sections hold solid. To collapse, twist back the cam locks and the sections slide back into each other.
Locking pin design prevents collapse when extended. When the poles are extended for fishing, a separate locking pin engages each section to prevent unintentional collapse from line tension or vibration. Important safety feature: an outrigger pole that collapses unexpectedly while a fish is on the line at speed will dump the line into the prop wash and likely damage the boat / break the line / lose the fish. The locking pin engagement gives positive mechanical security beyond the cam-lock friction.
316L stainless steel swivel rings. The line guide rings are made from Type 316L stainless steel - the marine-grade alloy with the highest corrosion resistance among economical stainless steels (vs the more common 304 stainless that's adequate for protected applications but not for hard offshore saltwater use). 316L resists pitting and crevice corrosion that destroys 304 in saltwater. For poles that live exposed on the cabin top or T-top getting sprayed by saltwater on every offshore trip, 316L is the right call.
Anodized aluminum collars. The collars at the section joints (where the cam-locking mechanism lives) are anodized aluminum - corrosion-resistant, hard-anodized for wear resistance, and matched to the carbon fiber sections for thermal expansion compatibility. The anodizing keeps the collars looking sharp over years of use without the cosmetic degradation that bare aluminum suffers from saltwater exposure.
Triple outrigger line design. The 20-foot poles include three line positions for outrigger lines - the upper, middle, and lower line guides allow you to run three independent lines per pole (six total per pair). Triple-line capability lets you run multiple stagger spreads off the same outrigger pole - a typical offshore tournament spread might use 8-10 lines total across both outriggers, plus center / flat lines off the cockpit. Triple line design on 20-foot poles is the standard for serious tournament-class spreads. (TACO's matching 16-foot poles use double-line design - appropriate for the smaller boats that run fewer lines.)
Mono or Dacron lines. The line guides accept either monofilament outrigger line or Dacron (the traditional braided dacron line preferred by some captains for its durability and stretch characteristics). Most modern installations use mono - it's cheaper, lighter, and easier to handle. Dacron remains the choice on some traditional sportfishers where the line's specific properties matter for the captain's rigging style.
Swivel roller design. The line guides use swiveling rollers rather than fixed eyes. The rollers track in the direction of line pull - whether the bait is straight back behind the boat, off to one side after a turn, or pulling at an angle from a hooked fish - which dramatically reduces line wear at the guide. Fixed-eye outrigger guides chafe through monofilament fast, especially under tournament-grade fishing conditions. swivel rollers eliminate that chafe.
Adjustable roller line caddy with brass rollers. The line caddy attaches to the T-Top or gunwale and routes the outrigger line from the reel to the outrigger pole. Brass rollers give smooth line travel without chafing, and the adjustable design lets you tune the caddy position for your specific T-Top or gunwale geometry. Better line management at the cockpit means cleaner deployment / retraction and less line tangling during the action.
1.5-inch diameter. The 1.5-inch pole diameter is the standard TACO carbon fiber outrigger size - matched to the GS-Series bases and tuned for the bending stiffness needed at the 20-foot length. Don't expect different-diameter poles from other manufacturers to fit GS-Series bases - the cylindrical interface is dimensioned specifically.
Sold in pairs. The kit includes both port and starboard outrigger poles - two carbon fiber poles, all line guides and swivel rollers, the line caddy hardware, and the locking pins. Bases are NOT included (sold separately). For a complete outrigger install from scratch, also order: a pair of GS-450, GS-500, or GS-1000 outrigger bases (TACO sells them as separate items), backing plates / hardware for the boat install, and the outrigger lines themselves (mono or Dacron, sold by the spool).
1-year limited warranty. TACO Marine backs the carbon fiber poles with a 1-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects under normal recreational and tournament use. Save the receipt and the original packaging if practical for warranty service. The major failure modes (carbon fiber damage, hardware failure, telescoping mechanism wear) are rare under normal use.

Frequently asked questions
Are the bases included?
No - the bases are sold separately. The OT-4200CF-HD kit includes the pair of poles only. For a complete outrigger install, also order TACO Pro Series outrigger bases: GS-450 (entry Pro), GS-500 (mid-tier with adjustable angle), or GS-1000 (top-tier with full pivot range). All three base series are Twist & Lock compatible with these poles.
Will it fit my boat?
The 20-foot pole length is sized for boats up to 50 feet LOA - sportfishers, big convertibles, large center consoles in the 36-50 foot range. For boats under 35 feet, TACO's matching 16-foot poles are the right call (smaller spread, less overhang). For boats over 50 feet, longer poles or different rigging (center-rigger / pinch-pole setups) are typically needed.
Why carbon fiber instead of aluminum?
Three reasons: higher strength at the same diameter (handles full triple-tier dredge loads where equivalent aluminum poles flex excessively), higher stiffness (less pole flex during fights, better line angle), and lower weight (deployment / retraction is easier in rough seas). For serious offshore trolling and tournament fishing, carbon fiber's advantages are real and visible. For light recreational use, the aluminum poles do the job at lower cost.
How does the Twist & Lock work?
The pole has a cylindrical mating surface at the base end. Twist the pole into the base receiver, engage the cam-locking mechanism, the cylinder-on-cylinder interface locks in place. No pins to align, no bolts to thread, no holes to find. Deploy / retract in seconds. The cylindrical interface also distributes load across a larger surface area than pin-mount, which is part of why the system handles full dredge loads.
Can I use these with non-GS bases?
Not without an adapter. The Twist & Lock interface is specific to TACO's GS-Series bases (GS-450, GS-500, GS-1000). For other TACO base series or other manufacturer bases, the cylindrical interface dimensions don't match. If you're upgrading from older non-GS bases, you'll need to upgrade the bases at the same time.
How long do the poles take to telescope down?
Under a minute per pole once you know the procedure. Twist back the cam-locking sleeves on each section, slide the sections together, lock them in place. Reverse the procedure to extend - extend each section, twist the cam locks tight, engage the locking pin to prevent unintentional collapse. Total deploy / retract time for both poles: 2-3 minutes once practiced.
What about line size?
The line guides accept standard outrigger line - typical offshore use is 200-400 lb test mono outrigger line, or equivalent Dacron. The roller guides handle line up to roughly 500 lb test without binding. For very heavy line (heavy tuna trolling at 600+ lb test), check with TACO support before relying on the standard guides.
Why triple outrigger lines instead of double?
Triple-line setup lets you run three lines per pole (six per pair) for tournament-class spread complexity - a typical big-boat tournament spread runs 8-10+ lines total. Double-line setups (TACO's 16-foot poles use this) work for smaller spreads typical on 30-35 foot boats. The 20-foot poles include the larger triple-line config because the boats running 20-foot poles also tend to run the bigger spreads.
Will the rollers wear out?
Eventually yes. The 316L stainless rings and brass rollers are durable but not infinite-life. Under heavy tournament use, expect 3-5 seasons before the rollers / rings show meaningful wear. Replacement parts are available from TACO. Rinse with fresh water after each saltwater trip and inspect the rollers periodically for excessive wear (visible grooves) - replace before the wear allows line to slip past the roller.
Can I install these myself?
The pole install (twisting them into existing GS-Series bases) is straightforward - 5 minutes per pole, no tools required. The base install (mounting the GS-Series bases to the boat) is more involved - requires drilling through the gunwale or T-Top, backing plates inside, sealant, and aligned pole geometry on both sides. Most owners install the bases at a shop and the poles themselves DIY.
How do I store them?
Telescope down to under 8 feet, leave them attached to the bases (twist them out of the bases for off-season storage if the boat goes on a trailer), keep them out of UV when possible. The clear coat protects the carbon, but minimizing UV exposure during long storage extends the cosmetic life. For trailering, the collapsed 8-foot length fits within the boat's overall envelope easily.
What's the warranty?
1-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects under normal recreational and tournament use. Service runs through the TACO Marine warranty network. Save the receipt and the original packaging if practical for warranty service.
