Raymarine Magnum 4kW Open Array Radar Pedestal
Raymarine Magnum 4kW Open Array Radar Pedestal — Product description
Raymarine's Magnum 4-kilowatt open-array radar pedestal, sold by itself without the antenna array (4-foot or 6-foot antenna sold separately). 72 nautical mile maximum range, automatic MARPA target acquisition, enhanced Bird Mode for surfacing feeding flocks up to 10 nm, beam sharpening for sub-1-degree bearing resolution, True Trails for vessel-history wake plotting, and full integration with Raymarine Axiom and LightHouse 3-based chartplotters plus backwards compatibility with legacy LightHouse 2 platforms.
The Magnum 4kW pedestal is Raymarine's premium open-array radar at the entry-level transmit power for the Magnum lineup, sitting below the 12kW pedestal that targets blue-water cruising. The 4kW configuration delivers a 72-nautical-mile maximum range, which fits coastal cruising, offshore sport-fishing, and most recreational long-range applications. The Magnum platform employs many of the same radar technologies trusted by the United States Coast Guard for commercial and patrol applications, packaged in a recreational pedestal with the durability and weather sealing offshore work demands.
This SKU is the pedestal only. The antenna array is a separate purchase: Raymarine offers a 4-foot array for compact installs where arch space is limited and a 6-foot array for tighter beamwidth and longer practical detection range at the same transmit power. The 4-foot array gives you a 2.5-degree horizontal beamwidth before beam sharpening. The 6-foot drops that to about 1.8 degrees. Raymarine's beam sharpening technology applied on the pedestal side digitally refines the radar returns to deliver better than 1-degree bearing resolution regardless of which array length you pick, which is the spec that lets the Magnum render map-like coastal detail and tight target separation at long range.
The headline operational features are what most operators notice first. Automatic MARPA target acquisition and tracking handles up to 25 simultaneous targets without manual click-to-track, with course and speed vectors computed in real time. Combined with Raymarine's Evolution 9-axis heading sensor and the Magnum's real-time heading updates, the target plots stay accurate even when the boat is rolling or turning, which is where older radars typically show vector lag. Enhanced Bird Mode is the second standout. The Magnum's Bird Mode surfaces feeding bird flocks at distances up to 10 nautical miles, which on a tuna boat or mahi boat is the difference between finding bait schools and trolling blind. The Bird Mode tuning on Magnum is meaningfully improved over Raymarine's previous radar platforms.
True Trails is the situational awareness feature that adds historical wake plotting to every moving target. Instead of just showing where a target is right now, True Trails draws a fading historical track behind the contact so you can see at a glance whether a vessel is closing, diverging, or holding course. Combined with the automatic MARPA tracking, the radar picture gives you both the absolute position and the recent motion history of every target on screen. For night watches and fog-bound passages, the True Trails feature dramatically reduces the cognitive load of interpreting the radar picture.
Network integration runs through Raymarine's RayNet Ethernet network. The Magnum pedestal pairs with current Raymarine Axiom and Axiom Pro multifunction displays running LightHouse 3, and the pedestal is also backwards compatible with legacy LightHouse 2-based displays including the a, c, e, eS, and gS-Series MFDs, the C-Series and E-Series Widescreen units, and the older E-Series Classic and G-Series displays. Not all Magnum features are available on every legacy MFD. The latest LightHouse 3 displays give you the full feature set including Bird Mode tuning, True Trails, and the enhanced MARPA. We can confirm compatibility with your specific chartplotter before you order. Tell us your existing chartplotter model and your arch configuration, and we'll spec the right antenna length and confirm the install plan.
One thing worth knowing about the Magnum versus the modern HALO solid-state pulse-compression radars from other manufacturers. The Magnum is magnetron-based, which means it has higher peak power on a single pulse but needs a 60-to-90-second warm-up cycle and doesn't have Doppler target coloring. Modern solid-state Doppler radars from competitor brands trade peak power for instant warm-up and color-coded approaching/receding targets. The Magnum's advantage is the very long-range performance and the proven Coast Guard-grade detection at extreme distance. The trade-off is the older operational paradigm without Doppler coloring. For Raymarine-loyal customers running an Axiom Pro helm, the Magnum is the natural radar pairing. For owners who specifically want Doppler coloring, Raymarine's Cyclone solid-state Doppler series is the alternative within the Raymarine lineup.

Frequently asked questions
Is the antenna included?
No. The Magnum 4kW pedestal is sold by itself. You order the 4-foot or 6-foot antenna array as a separate item. The 6-foot array gives you tighter beamwidth and slightly more long-range detection at the same transmit power. The 4-foot is more compact for arches with limited room. Tell us your boat and we'll recommend.
What's the difference between Magnum 4kW and 12kW?
Transmit power. The 4kW pedestal (this SKU) targets coastal cruising and offshore sport-fishing with a 72 nm maximum range. The 12kW pedestal is the blue-water option with 96 nm maximum range, sized for boats running ocean crossings and serious long-range operations. For boats that mostly fish within 50 nm of shore, the 4kW is plenty. For commercial and serious blue-water yachts, the 12kW is the right step up.
Does it work with my older Raymarine chartplotter?
Probably yes. The Magnum is backwards compatible with legacy LightHouse 2-based displays including a, c, e, eS, gS, C-Series Widescreen, E-Series Widescreen, E-Series Classic, and G-Series. Some Magnum features (Bird Mode tuning, True Trails) only work on current LightHouse 3 displays like the Axiom and Axiom Pro. Send us your specific MFD model and we'll confirm exactly which features you'll get.
How does Bird Mode actually help me find fish?
Bird Mode tunes the radar gain and filter to surface returns from flocks of feeding birds at distance. On a tuna boat or mahi boat, finding feeding birds means finding the bait schools they're working, which usually means finding the predator fish below the bait. The Magnum's Bird Mode reaches out to 10 nautical miles, which means you can spot productive water from much farther off than visual scanning would allow. Combined with the high target detail from beam sharpening, the radar effectively becomes a fish-finding tool.
What's True Trails?
True Trails is Raymarine's historical wake plotting. Instead of just showing each target's current position, the radar draws a fading track behind every moving contact showing where it was over the past few minutes. At a glance you can tell whether a target is closing, diverging, or just holding course. For night watches in shipping lanes, True Trails dramatically reduces the time it takes to interpret the radar picture.
Does it need a heading sensor?
Yes for full MARPA and chart-overlay functionality. Raymarine's Evolution 9-axis heading sensor is the recommended pairing. Without a heading sensor you still get the radar picture, just no automated MARPA tracking with vector overlays and no chart-overlay radar mode. Most installs add the Evolution sensor as part of the radar install if it's not already on the boat.
How heavy is the pedestal?
The Magnum 4kW pedestal weighs roughly 30 to 35 pounds without the antenna attached. Adding the 4-foot or 6-foot array brings the total weight up appropriately. The install needs structural arch mounting that can take both the static weight and the dynamic load of a spinning array offshore. Two-person install is the right plan.
What's the warranty?
Raymarine's standard marine electronics warranty applies. 2-year limited on the pedestal. Coverage details are on the warranty card. Raymarine's customer service handles in-warranty work directly.
Will it run on my 12V system?
Yes. The Magnum 4kW pedestal accepts 12V or 24V DC input, so both standard powerboat house bank voltages are supported.
What boat size is this radar right for?
Mid-sized cruising and sport-fishing boats roughly 30 to 55 feet running coastal and offshore work. Smaller boats are usually better served by Raymarine's Quantum or Cyclone dome radar series. Larger blue-water yachts often step up to the Magnum 12kW for the longer range and the commercial-grade detection performance.
