The Sika Sikaflex 221 Multi-Purpose Polyurethane Sealant / Adhesive in 10.3 oz cartridge is the standard reference marine / RV / automotive sealant-adhesive for joining and sealing different materials. Sika has decades of field-proven product reliability across recreational marine, commercial marine, RV, and automotive markets.

What Sikaflex 221 does. Sikaflex 221 is a one-component polyurethane that cures by reaction with atmospheric moisture. Apply from the cartridge with a standard caulking gun, smooth into place with a tool or finger (use wet finger or soapy water on tool to prevent sticking), allow to cure for the published cure time, and the result is a flexible / waterproof / UV-resistant bond between the joined materials. Functions as both: (1) Sealant - waterproof seal that prevents water intrusion at the joint between materials. (2) Adhesive - structural bond that holds the materials together. Most installations use Sikaflex 221 for both functions simultaneously - bedding deck hardware on a boat deck both bonds the hardware to the deck AND seals the mounting screw holes against water intrusion.

Marine practical use cases. Several common marine applications: (1) Bedding deck hardware - cleats, chocks, rail stanchions, hatch frames, fuel deck fills, water tank deck fills. Apply Sikaflex 221 to the mating surfaces and into the screw holes before installing the hardware. The sealant fills the gap between hardware base and deck, seals the screw holes against water intrusion into the boat interior, and bonds the hardware to the deck for structural rigidity. (2) Sealing through-hull fittings - below-waterline through-hull fittings (head intake, raw water intake, scupper discharge) require absolutely watertight sealing. Sikaflex 221 between the through-hull body and hull provides the seal. (3) Bonding interior trim - wood / plastic / fabric trim pieces in cabins, lockers, salon spaces. Sikaflex 221 bonds without requiring mechanical fasteners. (4) Sealing windshield and cabin window frames - keep water out of the cabin around window perimeters. (5) Sealing hatch and locker lids - the gasket area between hatch frame and lid. (6) Repair sealing - sealing cracks, holes, damaged areas during repair work.

Multi-purpose - the material breadth. The 'multi-purpose' designation reflects Sikaflex 221's broad material compatibility. Bonds and seals between: metal (steel, aluminum, stainless steel), wood (teak, plywood, composite materials, hardwoods, softwoods), plastics (acrylic, polycarbonate, ABS, PVC, fiberglass reinforced plastic), fiberglass / gelcoat, ceramic / porcelain, concrete, and similar substrates. Critical practical advantage: few sealants offer this material breadth - most marine sealants are specialized for specific substrate types (e.g., silicone for glass, butyl for windows, polysulfide for teak deck seams). Sikaflex 221 handles virtually anything you need to bond or seal on a boat with one product. For boat owners maintaining a kit of marine sealants, Sikaflex 221 is the universal sealant that covers most jobs - more specialized products for the specific cases where Sikaflex 221's properties don't match exactly (clear silicone for visible glass joints where Sikaflex's color would show, polysulfide for teak deck seam paying, etc.).

NOT for - cases where other products are better. While Sikaflex 221 handles most marine sealing, some specific applications use other products: (1) Painted surfaces over Sikaflex - polyurethane sealant blocks paint adhesion, so don't apply Sikaflex 221 in areas you'll paint later. (2) PVC piping joints - PVC requires specific PVC primer / cement for solvent-weld joints. (3) Engine / fuel system seals - hydrocarbon-resistant sealants required for fuel exposure. (4) High-temperature applications - engine room areas with sustained high temperature need high-temp silicone instead. (5) Teak deck seam paying - traditional polysulfide is the standard for traditional teak decks, though Sikaflex offers a specific TDS variant for this application.

Cure time and temperature dependence. Sikaflex 221 cures by reaction with atmospheric moisture: (1) Skin time - approximately 60 minutes at 73F / 50 percent humidity. The surface develops a skin within this time, preventing further smoothing. Tool / smooth the bead within the first 30-45 minutes of application before skin formation. (2) Tack-free time - approximately 3-5 hours, can be handled gently. (3) Full cure - approximately 4-7 days at typical room temperature and humidity. Don't expose to water immersion or stress until fully cured. Cure time increases substantially in cold conditions (under 50F) and decreases in warm humid conditions. For best results, apply at temperatures above 50F with reasonable humidity (above 30 percent). Plan project timing accordingly - don't apply Sikaflex 221 expecting to use the installation in 24 hours. allow at least 3-4 days for substantial cure before stressing.

White color. White is the standard marine sealant color - blends well with white hulls and white interior trim (the typical marine aesthetic for most recreational boats). Sikaflex 221 is also available in black, gray, and other colors as different SKUs for installations where the color choice matters for visual appearance. Pick the color that minimizes visual appearance at the joint - white for white boats, black for dark trim, etc.

10.3 oz cartridge - standard size. 10.3 oz (300ml) is the standard caulking cartridge size, fits any standard caulking gun. Coverage depends on bead size: 1/4 inch bead covers approximately 38 linear feet, 3/8 inch bead covers approximately 24 linear feet, 1/2 inch bead covers approximately 13 linear feet. For typical small marine projects (bedding 4-6 pieces of deck hardware, sealing 2-3 hatches), one cartridge is sufficient. For larger projects (re-bedding all deck hardware on a 30 ft boat, full window resealing), multiple cartridges may be needed. Sikaflex is also available in larger sausage packs and bulk containers for commercial / professional users.

Application tools. The application process uses: (1) Standard caulking gun - any quality caulking gun handles the 10.3 oz cartridge. Better-quality guns (revolver-style, smooth-rod) provide better control than basic ratchet-style guns. (2) Cartridge opener - usually built into the caulking gun handle for cutting the cartridge tip. (3) Putty knife or smoothing tool - for spreading and smoothing the bead. Wet finger or soapy water on the tool prevents Sikaflex from sticking during smoothing. (4) Acetone or mineral spirits - for cleanup of uncured Sikaflex on surfaces or tools before it cures (after curing, Sikaflex is permanent and removable only by mechanical means).

Storage. Store in original sealed cartridge at cool temperatures (below 80F ideally). Shelf life is approximately 12 months unopened in original packaging. Opened cartridges can be partially used and re-sealed with the cartridge cap or tape over the cut tip - but plan to use opened cartridges within a few weeks before the partial cure inside the cartridge progresses.
