Minn Kota Edge 70 Bow-Mount Trolling Motor 24V 45 inch — Product description

The Minn Kota Edge 70 is the rugged, no-frills foot-controlled bow-mount trolling motor for serious freshwater fishermen. 24V, 70 pounds of thrust, a 45-inch indestructible composite shaft that's guaranteed for life, the Latch and Door bracket for easy removal and storage, and the cool-running quiet motor that Minn Kota has built its reputation on. Cable-steer simplicity, no electronics to fail, made in the USA.

The Minn Kota Edge 70 (model 1355970) is the rugged cable-steer foot-controlled bow-mount trolling motor for freshwater anglers who want serious thrust without paying for electronics they don't need. 70 pounds of thrust on 24 volts, a 45-inch indestructible composite shaft, the Latch and Door bracket that's become a Minn Kota signature, and the cable-steer foot pedal that delivers direct mechanical control for boaters who'd rather feel the boat than tap a button. It's the trolling motor for fishermen who measure success by what's on the stringer, not by how many gadgets are on the bow.

What you get with the Edge 70. The motor itself with the 45-inch composite shaft, the Latch and Door bow-mount bracket, the heel-toe cable-steer foot pedal, the high-visibility directional indicator on top of the head, and the Weedless Wedge 2 propeller with the swept-back flared blades that power through vegetation without chopping or stalling. Everything you need to install on the bow and start fishing. No GPS, no spot-lock, no Bluetooth, no app. The Edge is what trolling motors used to be before the touchscreen era, and it's still what most fishermen actually need.

The Latch and Door mount is the part that matters every time you launch and load. The mount itself is extruded marine-grade anodized aluminum for the rigid structural strength that won't flex or fatigue under repeated stow-and-deploy cycles. The Latch and Door system uses a soft-grip knob to release the motor from the bracket so you can lift it off for transport, off-season storage, or security at the ramp. Other bow-mount brackets require tools or fight you on every removal. The Latch and Door pops off in seconds and seats back just as fast.

The 45-inch composite shaft is the right shaft length for most freshwater bass and walleye boats. Long enough to keep the prop fully submerged in chop and on plane, short enough to clear bridges and shallow trailer-launched waters. And it's the indestructible composite that Minn Kota guarantees for life. Hit a stump, hit a rock, snag a weed bed at full speed: the shaft flexes and recovers without bending, cracking, or losing alignment. A bent aluminum shaft means a new motor. A flexed composite shaft means you keep fishing.

The motor head is high-impact-resistant hybrid composite, not the painted aluminum of older Minn Kota Edge generations. Built to handle being slammed into docks, scraping under low overhangs, and getting stepped on by careless deck mates. The head also integrates the high-visibility directional indicator, which is the simple plastic arrow on top that shows you exactly where the prop is pointed without you having to lean over the bow and look. On a long trolling pass with the boat coming around, the directional indicator saves time you'd otherwise spend guessing.

Foot control is the right control style for fishermen who'd rather steer with feet and keep both hands on the rod. The redesigned heel-toe cable-steer pedal is wider, more responsive, and gives you better speed control than older Edge pedals. Press the toe to go forward, press the heel to reverse, swivel left and right with the foot to steer. Direct mechanical cable connection from pedal to motor, no electronics in between. When the pedal moves, the motor moves. No latency, no battery drain, no firmware updates required.

5 forward speeds, 3 reverse speeds. The mechanical speed control gives you discrete steps rather than the variable-speed ramping that electronic motors use. Old-school but reliable. You'll quickly learn which speed setting matches your trolling speed for whichever lure pattern you're running, and you can dial it in without taking your eyes off the rod.

The Weedless Wedge 2 propeller (MKP-32) included with this motor is the right prop for trolling through grass, lily pads, milfoil, hyacinth, and the other vegetation that fouls regular props. The swept-back flared blades push debris away from the prop hub instead of catching it, so you can troll through cover that would stop a lesser motor. If you fish bass tournaments in southern lakes or pad-heavy water bodies, this prop is genuinely the difference between fishing and fighting your motor.

The 42-amp current draw at full speed on 24V is what determines battery sizing. For a typical full day of fishing on the Edge 70 at mixed throttle, you'll want either a pair of high-quality Group 27 or Group 31 deep-cycle batteries (giving you 24V at 100-115Ah usable) or a single 24V lithium battery in the 100Ah class. Lithium gives you more usable run time and faster recharge, but flooded or AGM still works well if you're price-conscious.

Cool, quiet operation has been a Minn Kota signature for decades and the Edge keeps that tradition. Extra-large windings and commutators dissipate heat better than competing motors, which translates to longer motor life and less battery drain. Quieter operation matters for finesse fishing approach: bass and walleye both spook from prop noise, and the Edge runs quieter than the typical aluminum-shaft trolling motor it replaces.

What this motor isn't. It is not a Spot-Lock GPS-anchoring motor (that's the Ulterra and Terrova series), it is not a wireless-controlled motor (that's the Riptide PowerDrive and beyond), and it does not have built-in transducers. If you want any of those features, the Edge is the wrong motor. If you want a rugged, mechanically-direct, no-electronics-to-fail bow-mount that just trolls and won't quit, the Edge 70 is exactly the right motor.

Installation is straightforward bow-mount. Drill the through-bolt pattern, mount the bracket with stainless hardware (most installs use four 3/8 bolts with backing plates), run the 8-gauge battery cable to the bow with proper fuse protection at the battery, plug into the bracket. The motor lifts on and off via the Latch and Door system after that. Most installs take a couple of hours including time to drink a beer between steps.

2-Year limited Minn Kota warranty on the motor (lifetime warranty on the composite shaft). Same-day shipping before 3 PM ET on in-stock units.

Frequently asked questions

What's actually in the box?

The Edge 70 motor with 45-inch composite shaft, the Latch and Door bow-mount bracket, the heel-toe cable-steer foot pedal, the Weedless Wedge 2 propeller (MKP-32) installed on the motor, mounting hardware, and the install / owner's manual. Battery cables and through-bolt hardware sized to your boat are sold separately.

What's the difference between the Edge series and the Powerdrive series?

The Edge is cable-steer with mechanical foot pedal, no electronics. The Powerdrive is electric-steer with the iPilot remote and GPS spot-lock features. The Edge is the rugged, simple, fewer-things-to-fail option. The Powerdrive is for fishermen who want hands-free spot-lock and remote control. Both are great trolling motors. The right choice comes down to whether you want simplicity and bulletproof reliability (Edge) or modern features and remote convenience (Powerdrive).

Is the 45-inch shaft right for my boat?

45 inches is the right shaft length for most bass and walleye boats with a typical bow height of 14 to 18 inches above the waterline. The general rule is the prop should sit at least 12 inches below the waterline at rest. If your bow sits higher (deep V hulls, larger boats), you may want the 52-inch or 60-inch shaft variant. If you're not sure, measure from the top of the bow mount surface to the waterline and add 12 inches. That's the minimum shaft length you need.

How long will it run on a battery charge?

Run time depends on speed, conditions, and battery capacity. At full speed (~42A draw) on a typical 100Ah 24V battery setup, you'll get roughly 2 to 3 hours of full-throttle runtime. At a typical mixed-trolling speed (varying between speeds 2 and 4), you'll get most of a fishing day. Lithium batteries get more usable runtime than flooded or AGM at the same nameplate amp-hour rating because lithium delivers more of its capacity before voltage sag.

What batteries should I run with this?

Two Group 27 or Group 31 deep-cycle batteries wired in series for 24V is the traditional setup. Two of the same brand and age, fully charged before each trip. For more runtime in less weight, a single 24V lithium battery in the 100Ah class (LiFePO4 chemistry) is the modern upgrade. Lithium costs more upfront but lasts much longer and gives more usable amp-hours, so it pays back over a few seasons of heavy use.

Can I use this in saltwater?

No. The Edge series is freshwater only. The motor doesn't have the corrosion protection needed for saltwater use, and Minn Kota's saltwater warranty doesn't cover the Edge in salt environments. For saltwater bow-mount, look at the Riptide series (Riptide PowerDrive, Riptide Terrova, Riptide Instinct).

Does it have a built-in transducer?

No. The Edge 70 doesn't include a transducer for fishfinders. If you want a built-in transducer, look at the Ultrex or Terrova series, which can be ordered with the Built-In MEGA Down Imaging or Side Imaging transducers. The Edge keeps it simple, so transducer mounts go on the trolling motor shaft separately.

How does the Latch and Door bracket work?

The bracket stays mounted to the bow. The motor itself locks into the bracket via a hinged door that latches with a soft-grip knob. To remove the motor for storage or transport, twist the knob, swing the door open, and lift the motor straight out. Reinstalling is the reverse: drop the motor in, swing the door closed, twist to lock. No tools required. Takes about 10 seconds.

What's the warranty?

2-Year limited warranty on the motor, control systems, and bracket components. Lifetime warranty on the indestructible composite shaft. Service runs through the Minn Kota authorized dealer network in the U.S.

Is this a 12V or 24V motor?

24V. You'll need two 12V deep-cycle batteries wired in series, or one 24V lithium battery. Don't try to run this on a single 12V battery, the motor needs the full 24V to deliver the rated 70 pounds of thrust.

Will it work with iPilot or spot-lock?

No. The Edge is cable-steer with mechanical control only. There's no electronic interface for iPilot, spot-lock, or remote control. If you want spot-lock, you need a Powerdrive, Terrova, Ulterra, or Riptide series motor.

Where is it made?

Made in the USA at the Minn Kota factory in Mankato, Minnesota. Minn Kota has been building trolling motors at that facility for decades, and the Edge series is produced there alongside the rest of the freshwater lineup.
