Furuno FCV1150 12.1 inch Color LCD Digital Fish Finder — Product description

Furuno's commercial-grade 12.1-inch digital fish finder. The FCV1150 combines the Free Synthesizer architecture (any operating frequency from 28 to 200 kHz selectable on the fly), 1/2/3 kW selectable output power, an AR-coated 12.1-inch color LCD, White Edge bottom discrimination, and optional heaving compensation through a Furuno Satellite Compass. Designed for charter, commercial, and serious offshore recreational vessels.

The FCV1150 is Furuno's flagship 12.1-inch commercial-grade fish finder, designed for charter captains, light-commercial fishermen, and serious offshore recreational anglers who need flexibility and reliability beyond what a recreational fish finder delivers. It's a standalone unit, not a multifunction display, so the whole 12.1-inch glass is dedicated to sonar with no compromise from chart, radar, or instrument overlays sharing the screen.

Free Synthesizer (FFS) is the technology that separates the FCV1150 from fixed-frequency fish finders. Where most fish finders operate at one or two preset frequencies (50/200 kHz is the common pair), the FCV1150's FFS architecture lets the operator select any operating frequency in the 28 to 200 kHz range. When a Furuno transducer is connected, the operating frequency is auto-set in the menu, with manual override available at any time. The practical advantages are two: targeting different fish species often benefits from specific frequency tuning (deep-water tuna prefer different frequencies than reef-grouper or coastal mackerel), and avoiding interference from nearby vessels with transducers operating at similar frequencies is a simple frequency shift away rather than a hardware swap.

Output power is selectable in three steps. 1 kW is the right choice for shallow coastal water where higher power would over-saturate close-in returns. 2 kW is the middle ground for typical offshore work. 3 kW is the full-power mode for deep-water canyon and seamount tracking, where the additional power buys longer-range detection on bottom and on suspended targets at depth. Selecting the right power for the conditions is a one-key adjustment.

The 12.1-inch color LCD is the kind of display that separates commercial fish finders from recreational ones. AR-coated glass filter cuts glare in direct sunlight, the polarized-sunglasses-friendly filter keeps the screen visible through polarized lenses, and high-brightness backlighting handles bright tropical sun. For a long offshore watch where the operator is staring at the screen for hours, the AR coating and brightness make the difference between eye fatigue and comfortable observation.

Display modes cover every situation the operator might want to switch to: Single (high frequency or low frequency only), Dual (both frequencies side by side), Single plus Zoom (one frequency with a zoom panel showing detail in a specific depth range), Zoom (bottom lock, bottom zoom, or marker zoom for fine-detail bottom inspection), Mix Mode (overlaying high and low frequency returns on a single panel), Nav Data (navigation overlay from the connected GPS), and A-Scope (the classical echo-strength visualization for analyzing target separation). Two additional custom modes can be programmed by the operator and recalled with a single key press, useful for repeat trips to the same fishery where the operator has a known good display configuration.

Heaving compensation through a Furuno Satellite Compass is the feature that makes the FCV1150 viable for rough-water commercial operation. In heavy swells, a fish finder without heaving compensation shows the bottom rising and falling on every wave (because the transducer is rising and falling with the hull), which makes it nearly impossible to read fine bottom structure. With the satellite compass providing pitch and heave data, the FCV1150 compensates the display so the bottom presentation stays stable regardless of wave action. The result is consistent bottom and target detection in conditions that would render a non-compensated fish finder useless.

The transmission rate has been increased by more than 30 percent over earlier Furuno fish finder generations, which translates directly into more detailed information at the same depth scale. An automatic transmission-rate adjustment switches the echo rate up in shallow water (where short ping intervals improve fine-detail bottom imaging) and down in deep water (where longer intervals are necessary for the echo to return). The Furuno Digital Filter (FDF) suppresses noise and clutter without degrading legitimate echoes, which is the difference between a clean target picture and a screen full of static.

White Edge is a Furuno-specific bottom discrimination feature. The top edge of the seabed is rendered in white, highlighting the structure boundary and making fish targets just above the bottom (the classic place where game fish hold) much easier to distinguish from the seabed return itself. Combined with the Quick Gain knob (which adjusts gain across all on-screen echoes simultaneously with a single rotary input), the operator can tune the picture in seconds rather than minutes.

Power supply is 12 to 24V DC nominal at a maximum of 50 watts, low enough that the FCV1150 doesn't dent the boat's electrical budget. For AC-powered installations, an optional rectifier accepts 100/110/220/230 VAC. The unit is sized for permanent install in the wheelhouse or at the helm, with the 12.1-inch screen sized for the typical commercial-vessel pilothouse layout.

Frequently asked questions

What is Free Synthesizer technology?

Furuno's FFS architecture lets the operator select any operating frequency in the 28 to 200 kHz range, rather than being locked to fixed frequencies like 50/200 kHz. When a Furuno transducer is connected, the operating frequency auto-sets in the menu, with manual override available. The practical use is targeting different species (which prefer different frequencies) and avoiding interference from nearby vessels with transducers operating at similar frequencies.

What output power should I select?

1 kW for shallow coastal water (higher power saturates close-in returns). 2 kW for typical offshore work. 3 kW for deep-water canyon and seamount tracking where additional power buys longer-range detection on bottom and suspended targets at depth. The selection is a one-key adjustment underway.

Is a transducer included?

No. The FCV1150 ships as the display unit without a transducer. Furuno's 1 kW, 2 kW, and 3 kW commercial transducers are the matched pairings, with thru-hull, in-hull, and tilted-element options depending on hull type and installation.

What's heaving compensation and how do I get it?

Heaving compensation uses the boat's pitch and heave data to stabilize the fish finder display so the bottom doesn't rise and fall with every wave. The FCV1150 supports heaving compensation when interfaced with a Furuno Satellite Compass (SC-30, SC-50, or SC-110), which provides the motion data. In heavy swells the compensated picture is the difference between readable and unreadable.

What is the White Edge feature?

The top edge of the seabed is rendered in white, highlighting the structure boundary and making fish targets just above the bottom much easier to distinguish from the seabed return itself. It's the classic Furuno bottom-discrimination feature that helps operators identify bottom fish that would otherwise blend into the seabed.

What's the difference between Single, Dual, and Mix modes?

Single mode displays one frequency only (high or low). Dual mode displays both frequencies side by side as two panels. Mix mode overlays both frequencies on a single panel, with high-frequency returns shown in one color and low-frequency in another. Each is useful for different fishery and target-identification workflows.

What display modes are available?

Single (HF or LF), Dual, Single plus Zoom, Zoom (Bottom Lock, Bottom Zoom, or Marker Zoom), Mix, Nav Data (navigation overlay), and A-Scope (classical echo-strength visualization). Two additional custom modes can be programmed and recalled with one key press.

Can I save custom display configurations?

Yes, two custom modes can be programmed by the operator. Recall is a single key press, useful for repeat trips to the same fishery where you have a known good display configuration.

What's the Quick Gain knob?

A rotary knob that adjusts gain across all on-screen echoes simultaneously. The advantage over per-band gain adjustment is speed, rotate the knob, see the whole picture brighten or dim in real time, and find the optimal gain without hunting through menus.

What's the power supply?

12 to 24V DC nominal at a maximum of 50 watts. For AC installations, an optional rectifier accepts 100, 110, 220, or 230 VAC. Low DC draw means the FCV1150 doesn't impact the boat's electrical budget.

Will it interface with my GPS chartplotter?

Yes, the FCV1150 has NMEA 0183 input for GPS data, which the Nav Data display mode uses to overlay navigation information on the sonar screen. It does not output sonar data to a chartplotter, the FCV1150 is a standalone fish finder, not a networked sonar module.

Why a standalone fish finder vs a multifunction display?

Two reasons. First, the whole 12.1-inch screen is dedicated to sonar with no compromise from chart, radar, or instrument overlays sharing the display. Second, the FCV1150's Free Synthesizer frequency range and 3 kW power option exceed what most multifunction-display built-in sonars deliver. For commercial and serious offshore operators, the dedicated sonar console is the right tool.
