The Seachoice 11651 (model number 11651) is the heavy-duty 3-position ignition starter switch designed as a direct replacement for the OEM ignition switches found on most Johnson and Evinrude outboard engines from the 1980s through current production. Off / On / Start positions, push-to-choke function integrated into the key, 6 terminal connections on the back for the standard Johnson/Evinrude wiring harness, and the waterproof Delrin body that survives years of marine helm exposure. What this switch does and why it eventually fails. The ignition switch is the single most operated electrical control on any boat. Every time you start the engine, every time you shut it down, every time you turn the key to access electrical accessories without starting the engine, the switch contacts close and open. Combined with the marine environment (salt air, humidity, occasional spray when a wave breaks over the bow), the contacts gradually corrode and the mechanism wears. Eventually the switch develops symptoms: intermittent starting, the engine cuts out when you bump the key, the choke doesn't engage when you push the key in for cold start, the key spins freely without engaging the start position. Once those symptoms appear, replacement is the only fix. The contacts are sealed inside the switch body and aren't serviceable.

The 3-position design is the standard for Johnson/Evinrude outboards. Position 1 (Off): all circuits open, engine and accessories off. Position 2 (On): engine ignition energized, accessory circuits energized for radio, fishfinder, lights, and other dash-mounted accessories. Position 3 (Start): momentary position that engages the starter motor, with spring-return back to On when you release the key. The push-to-choke function is the additional motion: with the key in the On position, push the key inward against the spring to engage the choke circuit for cold-engine starting. 6 terminal connections on the back of the switch correspond to the Johnson/Evinrude standard wiring harness: B (battery in), I (ignition out to coil/key-on circuits), S (starter solenoid), C (choke circuit), A (accessory output), and M (magneto kill / dynamo). Match your existing wires to the corresponding terminals on the new switch and the install is a direct swap. If your original switch has labels rubbed off or you're not sure which wire goes where, consult your engine's wiring diagram or have a marine electrician do the install. Mis-wiring an ignition switch can cause anything from no-start to a fire, so do it right.

The Delrin switch body is the right material choice for marine helm use. Delrin (acetal) is a thermoplastic that's dimensionally stable across temperature swings, resistant to UV exposure that yellows and embrittles cheaper plastics, and unaffected by the lubricants and cleaners commonly found around the helm. The body won't crack or distort over years of sun and weather exposure. The internal mechanism is sealed inside the Delrin body for waterproof operation in marine helm conditions.

The switch fits panels up to 1/4-inch thickness, which covers virtually every typical helm dash on production fiberglass and aluminum boats. The mounting threads on the switch barrel match the standard Johnson/Evinrude factory ignition switch dimensions, so the switch drops directly into the existing dash hole without modification. No drilling, no enlarging the hole, no fabricating a mounting plate, just unscrew the original retaining nut from behind the dash, pull the old switch out, slide the new one in, tighten the retaining nut, and reconnect the wiring.

Installation. Disconnect the boat's main battery before working on any electrical component. Pull the existing ignition switch from behind the dash by removing the retaining nut. What this switch isn't. It is not a Mercury, Yamaha, Suzuki, or Honda ignition switch (those use different switch designs). Will it fit my outboard?

How do I tell if my existing switch needs replacement?

Common symptoms: the engine cranks intermittently or only after multiple key turns, the choke doesn't engage when you push the key in for cold start, the key spins freely without engaging the start position, electrical accessories cut out when the boat hits a wave, or the switch feels sloppy / loose in the dash. Any of those symptoms means the contacts inside the switch are corroded or worn, and replacement is the only fix (the switch isn't serviceable).

What does push-to-choke do?

With the key in the On position, push the key inward against the spring to energize the choke circuit on the carburetor. Release the key and it returns to On, releasing the choke. The choke restricts air flow to the carburetor briefly during cold engine starting, enriching the fuel/air mixture so the engine starts more easily when cold. Once the engine is warm, you don't need the choke. Modern fuel-injected outboards don't have a manual choke (they handle cold-start enrichment automatically), so push-to-choke is mostly for carbureted Johnson/Evinrude engines.

How do I install it?

Disconnect the boat's main battery first. Remove the retaining nut from behind the dash to free the existing switch. Note which wire connects to which terminal (take a photo of the existing wiring before disconnecting). Pull the old switch out, slide the new 11651 in through the same dash hole, thread the retaining nut on from behind, tighten.
