Frequently asked questions

What service plan do I need with this hardware?

KVH sells mini-VSAT Broadband plans in tiers from low-data communications service up to high-data plans suitable for video conferencing and IP video streaming. Plan selection depends on intended use - basic crew email and bridge communications need less data than streaming crew Netflix or running video conferencing from the bridge. KVH or your installer can size the plan to expected use.

Why are RF cables sold separately?

Cable run length between the radome and the below-deck unit (BDU) is site-specific to your boat's mounting position and BDU location. Selling fixed-length cables with the system would mean either extra cable to coil up or insufficient cable, both of which create signal integrity problems. KVH sells RF cable kits in various lengths or custom lengths as needed.

Will it work outside main commercial shipping lanes?

Yes, but performance is best in main shipping lanes where the HTS spot beams concentrate capacity. In extreme latitudes (high arctic or antarctic) or in rarely-traveled areas, you'll see standard non-HTS service which is still functional but at lower data rates. Real-time gaming or low-latency video conferencing is impractical at this latency.

Can multiple users connect at once?

Will it work during storms?

The stabilized antenna tracks the satellite through normal boat motion including heavy weather. In extreme weather (rain fade during severe storms), Ku-band performance can degrade significantly due to signal attenuation through heavy rain. The service usually continues but at reduced throughput. Ku-band is more susceptible to rain fade than C-band, which is a tradeoff for the smaller antenna size that makes the V3HTS practical for vessel mounting.
