Lowrance Recon FW 48" Trolling Motor + FreeSteer + Foot Pedal — Product description

The Lowrance Recon FW 48" is the freshwater trolling motor that ships with the FreeSteer joystick remote, a wireless programmable foot pedal, and the HDI sonar nosecone. Brushless 24V/36V power, a carbon-fiber-infused composite shaft with a lifetime warranty, IPX7 sealing, and full integration with Lowrance displays over NMEA 2000. The serious bass and walleye motor with sonar built into the head.

The Lowrance Recon FW 48-inch is the freshwater trolling motor that finally puts a Lowrance brushless drive, a Lowrance HDI sonar transducer, and a real FreeSteer joystick remote into one package designed end-to-end by the same engineering team that builds your fishfinder. If you're already running Lowrance HDS or Elite displays, this is the motor that talks to your network natively and gives you sonar imagery directly under the bow without a second transducer install.

The headline feature is the FreeSteer joystick remote. It's lightweight with a color LCD that shows speed, heading, lock state, and diagnostic codes. The single most important thing it does that other remotes don't: jog. You can lock onto a spot and then move that lock five feet at a time in any of eight diagonal directions, not just the four cardinals. That sounds like a small thing on paper. On the water, when you find structure that's just off your initial lock, the diagonal jogs let you slide right onto it without having to break the lock and rebuild it.

The included wireless foot pedal is the right answer for boaters who don't want a cable running the length of the bow. It pairs over wireless to the motor head and gives you 40 degrees of heel-toe travel for steering, plus a detachable lower keypad you can program with shortcuts to your most-used functions. Spot-lock, cruise control, anchor up, anchor down, whatever you reach for most often. Battery life on the foot pedal is good enough for a full day of typical fishing, but charge it after every trip if you're a heavy user. It runs on a small internal cell that takes a few hours to top off.

The 48-inch shaft is the right length for boats with a bow height of around 12 to 18 inches above the waterline, which covers most bass boats, walleye boats, and aluminum tin boats up to about 19 feet. If your bow sits higher, like a 20-foot deep-V bay boat in real chop, you'll fight prop blow-out and want to step up to the 54-inch or 60-inch Recon. If your bow is lower, the 48 is generous and gives you margin in chop.

Brushless motor design is the modern standard for trolling motors and the reason this generation runs much quieter than older brushed designs. Less heat, less wear, more efficiency, and a noticeably softer hum at the bow when you're working a bedded fish or a clear-water school. The motor runs on either 24V or 36V, with the higher voltage delivering more total thrust and longer runtime per amp-hour at the same speed. For a typical 48-inch Recon FW build, plan on a 24V setup with two 12V Group 27 or 31 deep-cycle batteries for most boats. Step to 36V with three batteries if you fish bigger water with current or wind that demands more sustained thrust.

The HDI nosecone is the differentiator. The transducer is built into the bottom of the motor head where the propeller doesn't generate the noise interference that a transom-mount transducer fights. You get clean Medium and High CHIRP plus 455 and 800 kHz DownScan imagery directly under your fishing position, all of it feeding back to your Lowrance display over the existing sonar port. If you want side imagery as well, the HDI nosecone is plug-and-play upgradeable to the Active Imaging 3-in-1 nosecone, no rewiring required.

Steering precision is one of those specs that doesn't sound exciting until you fish with it. The Recon does 1-degree steering increments, which means small joystick or pedal inputs translate to small heading changes instead of overshooting and correcting. Combined with the internal compass and the brushless drive's high response speed, the boat tracks where you point it without the rubber-band feel that older trolling motors have when you fight wind.

The shaft is a carbon-fiber-infused composite. Lowrance backs it with a lifetime warranty against breakage, which is the longest warranty in the segment. Composite gives you flex on impact instead of bending or snapping, and the carbon-fiber core makes it stiffer torsionally than pure plastic composites. The motor itself carries a 3-year warranty.

The unit is IPX7 sealed. Pivot-style mount with a one-hand cam lock depth collar that you can adjust on the fly without bending over with a wrench. Multiple accessory mount points molded into the head so you can add a camera, a light, or a transducer arm without drilling new holes. Backlit controls and LED indicators on the motor and the foot pedal so you can see the unit and the controls at last light. NMEA 2000 connectivity for clean integration with the boat's electronics network.

Install. Mount the bracket on a flat bow with the included hardware. Run dedicated 6 AWG tinned marine wire from the batteries to the motor through the boat, with proper fusing at the battery end and a quick-disconnect at the bow if you're going to remove the motor for trailering. The HDI nosecone wires to your Lowrance display via the existing sonar port. Update display firmware before pairing to make sure you're on the version that recognizes the Recon. Software updates for the motor itself happen over the mobile app via wireless.

Diagnostic codes show on the FreeSteer remote, the mobile app, or your Lowrance display, which is a nice touch when something needs attention. The motor is user-serviceable in ways that older sealed designs weren't, with replaceable wear parts available through the Lowrance dealer network.

Lifetime warranty on the shaft, 3-year warranty on the motor. Same-day shipping before 3 PM ET on in-stock units.

Frequently asked questions

What boat size is the Recon FW 48-inch right for?

It's sized for boats with a bow height of around 12 to 18 inches above the waterline, which covers most bass boats, walleye boats, and aluminum tin boats up to about 19 feet. If your bow is taller, look at the 54 or 60-inch Recon to keep the prop in the water in chop.

Should I run it on 24V or 36V?

24V works for most freshwater builds: two Group 27 or 31 deep-cycle batteries in series. Step to 36V with three batteries if you fish bigger water with sustained current or wind that demands more thrust over longer runs. 36V also gives you longer runtime per amp-hour at the same speed.

What's the included sonar nosecone do?

The HDI nosecone is a Lowrance transducer built into the bottom of the motor head. It runs CHIRP Medium and High plus 455 and 800 kHz DownScan, and feeds the imagery directly to your Lowrance display through the standard sonar port. Because the transducer is in front of the propeller, you get clean signal without prop noise interference that transom-mount transducers fight.

Can I upgrade the sonar later?

Yes. The HDI nosecone is plug-and-play upgradeable to the Active Imaging 3-in-1 nosecone, which adds SideScan imagery to the same setup. No rewiring required, just swap the nosecone.

What makes the FreeSteer joystick different from a regular remote?

It uses a true joystick with 8-direction Spot-Lock Jog. Once you've locked a position, you can jog the lock diagonally, not just forward, back, left, or right. On the water that means you can slide onto structure that's just off your initial lock without breaking and rebuilding the lock.

Is the foot pedal really wireless?

Yes. It pairs over wireless to the motor head and runs on a small internal battery that lasts a typical fishing day. Charge it after every trip if you're a heavy user. The detachable keypad on the pedal is programmable so you can map your most-used functions to single-button shortcuts.

How accurate is the steering?

1-degree increments through the joystick or the foot pedal. Combined with the brushless drive and the internal compass, the boat tracks where you point it without the rubber-band overshoot you get from older slower-response trolling motors.

Is it built for saltwater?

This is the FW (freshwater) model. It's built for lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. The Recon SW model is the saltwater version with full corrosion treatment on the lower unit and hardware. If you fish brackish or salt, get the SW model instead. If you only occasionally splash this one in salt, rinse the lower unit thoroughly with fresh water immediately after every trip to protect the warranty.

What displays does it integrate with?

Lowrance HDS, HDS Live, HDS Pro, and Elite FS displays. The HDI nosecone connects to the display's sonar port and the motor connects to the network over NMEA 2000 for steering, throttle, and waypoint integration. Update display firmware before pairing to make sure you're on a version that recognizes the Recon.

What wire size do I need from the batteries?

6 AWG tinned marine wire is the minimum for a typical bow-mount run. Keep the run short. Long, undersized wire causes voltage drop, which kills torque under load. Run dedicated cable from the batteries with proper fusing at the battery end and a quick disconnect at the bow if you remove the motor for trailering.

How long is the warranty?

Lifetime warranty on the carbon-fiber-infused composite shaft against breakage. 3-year warranty on the motor itself. Both are backed through the Lowrance dealer network and the user-serviceable design lets the warranty network handle field repairs more easily than older sealed designs.

Is the shaft really indestructible?

It's not indestructible, but it's flex-tolerant. The carbon-fiber-infused composite gives you flex on impact instead of bending or snapping. That's exactly what you want when you bump a stump or run aground at idle. Lowrance backs the shaft with a lifetime warranty because they expect it to last that long.
