Minn Kota Riptide PowerDrive 55 12V 54" w/Wireless Remote — Product description

The Minn Kota Riptide PowerDrive 55 with full wireless LCD remote is the 12V saltwater bow-mount trolling motor for smaller bay boats, flats skiffs, and inshore center consoles in the 14 to 17 foot range. 55 pounds of thrust on a single battery. Multi-stage saltwater corrosion treatment, Spot-Lock GPS, AutoPilot, and a lifetime guarantee on the composite shaft.

The Minn Kota Riptide PowerDrive 55 with the full LCD wireless remote is the 12V saltwater Riptide for boats that don't need (or can't carry) the dual-battery 24V setup of the bigger 70-lb model. 55 pounds of thrust runs off a single 12V deep-cycle battery, which keeps the install simple and the weight down. The 54-inch shaft is sized for inshore boats with a bow that sits 18 to 22 inches above the waterline. Bay boats, flats skiffs, and small center consoles are the typical fits.

This SKU is the wireless-remote variant. The remote ships in the box with a lanyard, a full-size LCD that shows speed, lock state, GPS signal strength, AutoPilot heading, and battery state in plain text, and intuitive button-driven menu navigation. If you'd rather have the smaller, lighter Micro Remote, get the Micro Remote variant instead. Same motor, different control surface.

Saltwater is hard on trolling motors. Riptide answers it with a multi-step corrosion treatment on the lower unit. The housing is grit-blasted, then aluminum-coated to block oxidation, and finished in powder coat. We've sold these to flats fishermen in Florida, snook chasers in the Keys, and bay boat owners up and down the East Coast. They get reliable seasons out of the motor as long as they rinse the lower unit and the remote charging port after every trip. Skip the rinse and you'll see connector corrosion within a year. Don't skip it.

The Advanced GPS system is the feature that sells this motor. Spot-Lock holds your boat over a piece of structure using GPS without an anchor. It locks within a few feet on a calm day. In choppy three-foot conditions and steady wind, expect more drift, but for most inshore reds, snook, trout, and bay snapper work, it does the job and frees you up to fish. AutoPilot keeps a heading hands-free. The full-size LCD on the wireless remote shows the active mode and heading at a glance, which beats squinting at a smaller display.

Digital Maximizer is the variable-speed power management system. It draws only the amperage you need at the speed you set instead of dumping full power at every notch. Anglers running a single Group 31 deep-cycle battery on a 12V setup typically get a full day of fishing on a single charge for typical inshore work, even with steady Spot-Lock use. Pair the Riptide with a quality on-board charger and you'll be ready the next morning without thinking about it.

The Push-to-Test Battery Meter sits right on the motor head as a backup readout independent of the remote. One button, one quick LED, you know your charge state without pulling the cover off your battery box.

The Deploy-Assist Lever is the small detail that makes the motor a pleasure to live with. Press the lever, the motor drops into the water cleanly. Stowing is just as easy and the motor locks down securely so it doesn't bounce on the run. The motor itself runs cool and quiet thanks to the Riptide lower unit design.

The composite shaft is a Minn Kota exclusive and they back it with a lifetime guarantee against breakage. Composite gives you flex on impact instead of bending or snapping, exactly what you want when you bump an oyster bar or a crab pot float at four mph. Above the shaft, the Power Prop (MKP-37) is the standard prop on the Riptide line and bites well in open water and over moderate grass. Anglers who fish thicker grass beds sometimes swap to a weedless prop pattern, but for most saltwater work the stock prop is the right choice.

This motor is One-Boat Network compatible, so it pairs with compatible displays and chargers in the same ecosystem for shared battery state and motor control. AutoPilot and Power Steering are both standard, which means small touches on the remote translate to smooth course changes instead of overshooting. There's no built-in sonar on this model, no foot pedal in the box, and no QUEST features. If you want sonar in the foot of the motor, look at the Minn Kota Riptide Terrova QUEST or Ulterra QUEST line, not this one.

A note on shaft length. 54 inches is the right length for boats with a bow height of around 18 to 22 inches above the waterline. If your bow is higher, like a deep-V offshore center console, you'll want a longer shaft so the prop stays buried in chop. If your bow is lower, like a small flats skiff, a shorter shaft is cleaner. Get this wrong and you'll fight prop blow-out every time the boat rocks.

12V vs 24V. The 55 lb 12V version (this SKU) is the right call if you want single-battery simplicity and lower install weight, and your boat is in the 14 to 17 foot range running calm to moderate inshore water. Step up to the 70 lb 24V version if you fish bigger water, fight more current, run a bigger boat (16 to 19 feet), or want more headroom on hard-charging Spot-Lock days.

Bolt this on a flat bow with the included mounting hardware and run an 8-gauge tinned wire run back to your battery. Keep the run short. Voltage drop on a long run kills torque under load, especially on 12V systems where the per-amp voltage loss is more painful than 24V.

Two-year limited warranty on the motor, lifetime guarantee on the composite shaft. Same-day shipping before 3 PM ET on in-stock units.

Frequently asked questions

Should I get the 55 lb 12V or the 70 lb 24V Riptide?

Pick the 55 lb 12V (this SKU) if you want single-battery simplicity and lower install weight, and your boat is in the 14 to 17 foot range running calm to moderate inshore water. Pick the 70 lb 24V if you fish bigger water, fight more current, run a bigger boat (16 to 19 feet), or want more headroom on hard-charging Spot-Lock days. Both have the same shaft, same prop, same Riptide saltwater build.

What size boat is the 55 lb thrust right for?

It's sized for boats in the 14 to 17 foot range, including bay boats, flats skiffs, and small inshore center consoles up to about 1,400 pounds loaded. Heavier boats or boats running real wind and current are happier with the 70 lb 24V model.

How long is the shaft and what bow height does it suit?

The shaft is 54 inches. That length pairs well with a bow that sits roughly 18 to 22 inches above the waterline. Taller bows benefit from a 60 or 72-inch shaft so the prop stays in the water in chop.

Is this rated for true saltwater use?

Yes. The Riptide line is built for salt. The lower unit is grit-blasted, aluminum-coated, and powder-coated to keep oxidation off the housing, and the seals and hardware are saltwater grade. Rinse the lower unit and the remote charging port with fresh water after every trip and you'll get years out of it.

How does Spot-Lock work?

Spot-Lock uses GPS to hold your boat in place without an anchor. Mark a spot on the wireless remote and the motor steers and throttles automatically to keep you within a few feet of that spot. It works best in calm to light chop. In strong wind on a small boat, expect more drift, but it still beats anchoring most days.

What battery does it need?

12V power. A single 12V deep-cycle marine battery, typically Group 27 or Group 31 sized for the kind of fishing day you do. Group 31 AGM is the most common pairing for a full day of fishing with active Spot-Lock use. Pair it with a quality on-board charger so you're ready the next morning.

What size wire should I run from the battery?

8-gauge tinned marine wire is the minimum for a typical bow-mount run on 12V. Keep the run as short as you can. Long, undersized wire causes voltage drop, which kills torque under load. Voltage drop on a 12V system hurts more per foot than on a 24V system because the per-amp voltage loss is a bigger fraction of the supply.

Does the motor come with a foot pedal?

No. This model is wireless-remote only. The Riptide PowerDrive 55 does not have a foot pedal option in this configuration. If you prefer foot pedal steering, look at a different control style in the Riptide line.

Is it One-Boat Network compatible?

Yes. It pairs with One-Boat Network compatible displays and chargers so the system shares battery state, motor control, and waypoint data.

What prop comes on the motor?

The standard Power Prop (MKP-37). It bites well in open water and moderate grass. If you fish heavy grass beds regularly, a weedless-style prop pattern is a common upgrade.

Does it have AutoPilot and Power Steering?

Yes to both. AutoPilot holds a heading hands-free and Power Steering makes course changes feel smooth instead of jerky. The full-size wireless remote shows the active heading on the LCD when AutoPilot is engaged.

How long is the warranty?

Two-year limited warranty on the motor and a lifetime guarantee on the indestructible composite shaft against breakage.
