Jabsco 18598-2000 Service Kit for 18555 Series Macerator Pump

The Jabsco 18598-2000 is the factory service kit for the 18555-000 series self-priming macerator pump, the little workhorse that empties your holding tank at the end of a weekend on the water. Macerator pumps live a hard life. They chop and move waste, they sit unused for weeks, and then you ask them to prime dry and pump on demand. That's exactly the duty cycle that wears out impellers and seals. This kit puts the whole wear package back to new so you're not shopping for a whole new pump.

Open the box and you get the parts that actually wear: a new impeller, the impeller housing, the shaft seal, a full gasket set, the mounting stud, and the fiber washer. That's every soft part and sealing surface in the pump end. The motor and the body stay on the boat. You're rebuilding the business end, which is where nearly all macerator failures start.

How do you know it's time? A few tells. The pump runs but flow drops off, which usually means a torn or worn impeller vane. It won't self-prime anymore, so you get a lot of motor noise and not much movement, another impeller symptom. Or you spot a weep at the impeller housing. On a lot of these pumps a small leak shows up at the housing gasket after a year and a half or so of service, and once it starts it only gets worse. Any of those, and it's kit time.

The job itself is straightforward if you take your time. Pull power at the breaker first, then close the tank valve. Once the pump end is apart, clean the macerator chamber completely before the new impeller goes in. Any grit or old debris left behind will score the fresh housing on the first run, and then you're right back where you started. Set the new gaskets on a clean, flat mating surface. If your mounting surface has warped at all, flatten it, because the gasket set seals best against true metal. Snug the stud down evenly and don't lean on it. These pump ends want a light, even torque, in the neighborhood of 25 inch-pounds, not the full arm you'd give a hose clamp. Over-torque cracks housings.

Replace the fiber washer and stud every time you're in there. They're cheap insurance. Skip them and the pump can vibrate loose on the discharge line over a season, and a loose macerator is a mess nobody wants to clean up. That's the whole reason Jabsco bundles them into the kit instead of selling the impeller alone.

This is a marine and RV part, and it earns its keep on both. On a boat it's the pump behind the head that sends the holding tank overboard at the pump-out or offshore where it's legal. In an RV it's the waste pump that empties the black tank. The 18555 series suits mid-size setups well, think a 30 to 40 foot sailboat with a 15 to 20 gallon tank, and it likes a short, straight discharge run. If you've fought long or tall plumbing runs, that's a plumbing question, not a pump-kit question, and this kit won't change it.

A lot of boaters keep one of these kits in the spares locker even before the pump acts up. A macerator never fails at the dock on a calm Tuesday. It fails on a full tank at the end of a long weekend. Having the wear parts already aboard turns a trip-ender into an hour of work.

One honest note. If your pump has been run dry hard or the shaft is scored, an impeller and seal alone won't save it, and you'll want to look at the shaft and bearing too. But for the far more common case, a tired impeller and a weeping seal, this is the fix. Rebuild it in an afternoon, and you'll get years more out of a pump you already trust.
