Camco Elite 48053 Round Bar Weight Distribution Hitch, 1,000 lb — Product description

Towing a heavy travel trailer and watching the back of your truck squat every time you hitch up? The Camco Elite 48053 round bar weight distribution hitch moves that tongue load off your rear axle and spreads it across the whole rig. Rated for 1,000 pounds of tongue weight and trailers up to 10,000 pounds, it ships as a complete package minus the ball.

Hitch up a big travel trailer with a plain ball mount and you'll feel it right away. The back of the truck squats, the headlights point at the trees, and the steering goes light. That's tongue weight pushing straight down on your rear axle instead of being shared across the whole rig. The Camco Elite 48053 round bar weight distribution hitch fixes that. It takes the load sitting on the back of your truck and spreads it forward onto the front axle and back onto the trailer axles, so the whole setup rides level and tows the way it should.

This is the heavy end of the Elite line. It's rated for 1,000 pounds of tongue weight and travel trailers up to 10,000 pounds gross. So it's built for full-size family trailers, mid-size toy haulers, and anything else that puts real weight on the ball. If your loaded tongue weight sits well under that number, a lighter bar set will tension better. But for a big trailer that's been squatting your truck, this is the range you want.

The heart of the system is a pair of steel round spring bars. They slot into the hitch head and get tensioned up under the trailer frame with the hook-up brackets and chains. That tension is what pulls everything back to level. Round bars have been doing this job on travel trailers for decades. They're simple, they're strong, and when they're set right they just work.

Camco ships this one as a full package so you're not chasing parts. You get the two spring bars, the ball mount and shank, the chains, the hook-up brackets, the hitch pin, and a clip and bolt package sized for adjustable hitch heads. The shank drops into a standard 2-inch trailer receiver. About the only thing that isn't in the box is the ball itself.

You'll need a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball to match a 1,000 pound setup, and it's not included, so grab one before your first trip. That's normal for weight distribution kits at this rating, and it lets you match the ball to the trim height you settle on. One thing worth knowing up front: this is a weight distribution kit, not a sway control kit. It'll cure the squat and the light steering, but if you tow a tall trailer in crosswinds or heavy truck traffic and want to knock down side-to-side sway too, plan on adding a friction sway bar. Plenty of folks run both.

Setup takes a little patience the first time. You measure your truck and trailer at ride height, set the hitch head angle, and dial in the spring bar tension until the front of the truck comes back down to where it sat empty. Once you've got your numbers, hitching up on trip day is quick. Snug the bars into the brackets, drop the pin, and go. We tell first-timers to do that initial setup in the driveway with a tape measure and no rush, not in a crowded campground with a line building behind them.

A little maintenance keeps it towing right. Check the spring bar tension and the chain hookups after your first fifty miles or so, because things settle in as the rig works down the road. Give the hardware a quick look before each trip and keep the bar ends and brackets clean. Steel round bars don't ask for much, but a two-minute walkaround at the fuel stop is cheap insurance on a long haul.

If you're towing a heavy bumper-pull and you're tired of the nose-high stance and the wandering feel at highway speed, this is the fix. It's a complete, proven package that gets a big trailer riding flat and steering like your truck again. Add the right ball, take your time on the first setup, and you'll wonder why you waited.

Frequently asked questions

What size trailer is the Camco Elite 48053 built for?

It's rated for up to 1,000 pounds of tongue weight and 10,000 pounds gross trailer weight, which covers most full-size travel trailers. If your loaded tongue weight sits well under 1,000 pounds, a lighter bar rating will tension better.

Is the hitch ball included?

No. You'll need to add a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball to match the 1,000 pound rating. It's left out on purpose so you can match the ball to your final trim height.

What comes in the package?

Two round spring bars, the ball mount and shank, chains, hook-up brackets, a hitch pin, and a clip and bolt package for adjustable hitch heads. Everything but the ball.

Does this include sway control?

No, this is a weight distribution kit. It levels the load and takes the squat out, but it doesn't have built-in sway control. If you want to fight crosswind sway too, add a friction sway bar alongside it.

Will the shank fit my truck's receiver?

The included shank is built for a standard 2-inch trailer receiver, which is what most half-ton and three-quarter-ton trucks run.

What's the difference between round bar and trunnion bar?

Round bars hang below the hitch head and are the classic travel-trailer setup, simple and proven. Trunnion bars slot into the head for a little more ground clearance. For most bumper-pull trailers in this weight range, round bars like these do the job well.

How hard is the initial setup?

Plan on some time the first go. You measure the truck and trailer at ride height, set the head angle, and tension the bars until the front of the truck drops back to its empty height. Once your numbers are dialed in, hooking up on trip day is fast.

Can I use it with an adjustable hitch head?

Yes. The clip and bolt package is sized for adjustable hitch heads, so you can set the head angle and height to get the bars tensioned correctly.

Is there a warranty?

Yes, it carries the full Camco manufacturer warranty. We're an authorized Camco dealer, so any warranty question runs through us.
