Roof vent lids take a beating. They sit flat to the sky, soaking up UV all day, and the original plastic gets brittle over time. First you see it fade, then a crack shows up along a stress line, and the next hard rain finds its way inside. We've swapped a lot of these over the years, and the job is honestly one of the easier RV fixes you can do yourself. Pop the old lid, transfer or replace the hardware, set the new one, done.

This lid is molded from polypropylene, so it flexes instead of shattering in the cold, and it comes in black to match darker roof setups. When in doubt, measure the opening, it should be a nominal 14 by 14, and check the hinge style against the old lid before you install.

Install is straightforward with basic hand tools. Open the vent fully, back out the screws holding the old lid to the hinge arms, and lift it off. Set the new lid onto the arms, line up the holes, and drive the hardware. A lot of folks add a bead of butyl or a few stainless screws while they're up there, especially on an older frame where the plastic bosses have seen better days. Snug the screws by hand so you don't strip the plastic, then open and close the vent a couple times to make sure it swings clean and latches.

While you've got the ladder out, it's worth giving the whole vent a once-over. Check the sealant around the flange for cracks or lifting, and reseal any tired spots with a lap sealant made for RV roofs. A new lid on a leaky flange still lets water in, so the two jobs go hand in hand. If the pivot points feel stiff, a touch of silicone on the hinge, not the seal, keeps the lid swinging freely through hot summers and cold nights.

One more note on the color. Black hides roof grime better than a clear or smoke lid, and it holds up fine, though like any exterior plastic it will lighten a little over several seasons of direct sun. That's normal and it doesn't affect how the lid seals or latches. If your roof calls for black, this is the one.
