YakGear StandnCast Kayak & Canoe Outriggers (Pair) — Product description

The YakGear StandnCast Kayak & Canoe Outriggers (MPN 01-0096) are the company's standalone-cast / stand-up stability outriggers for fishing kayaks and canoes - a pair of removable floats on adjustable 30-inch arms that turn a tippy paddle craft into a stable platform you can stand and cast from. Each kit includes 2 outriggers (one per side of the boat), 30-inch adjustable arms, RAILBLAZA StarPort HD base mounts (included), and the floats with pre-installed 1/4"-20 brass thread inserts for direct StarPort attachment. The arms raise independently for getting close to docks or obstructions. Outriggers are removable at any time - StarPort base stays on the boat, the rest comes off for transport. Mount front or rear. Installation hardware included for kayak mounting (canoe install typically requires customer-supplied longer bolts to clear the canoe gunwale). Not intended for surf conditions. 1-year warranty.

The YakGear StandnCast Kayak & Canoe Outriggers solve the most common complaint about fishing kayaks and canoes: the boat is too tippy to stand up and sight-cast, too tippy to fight a fish without worrying about going over, too tippy in the wake of a passing boat. YakGear (one of the original kayak fishing accessory companies) designed the StandnCast system specifically for the fishing-from-a-paddle-craft use case where you need stability without giving up the easy transport and shallow draft of a kayak or canoe.

Two outriggers, one per side. The kit includes a complete pair of outriggers - one for each side of the boat. Mounted in the standard outrigger configuration (port and starboard, roughly amidships or slightly aft), the two floats give you stability in roll (the side-to-side tipping motion that's the main concern in a paddle craft). With both floats deployed, you can stand and cast, lean over the side to land a fish, or just sit comfortably in choppy water without the constant low-grade balance management that's a baseline part of paddling a narrow kayak.

Adjustable 30-inch arms. The outrigger arms are 30 inches long and attach to the boat at one end and the float at the other. The 30-inch length gives you enough turning effect to make the floats meaningfully effective at stabilization without the floats sitting so far out that they catch every wave or constantly drag in the water during normal paddling. Adjustable means the arms can be raised independently - if you're approaching a dock and need clearance on one side, raise that arm without disturbing the other. Independent adjustment matters in close-quarters paddling where one fixed-position outrigger arm can become an obstacle.

RAILBLAZA StarPort HD mounting. Both ends of the system - the boat-side mount and the float-side mount - use the RAILBLAZA StarPort HD base. StarPort HD is the heavy-duty version of RAILBLAZA's StarPort universal accessory mounting system - widely used across the kayak fishing world because it's strong, weatherproof, and lets you snap accessories on and off in seconds without tools. With the StarPort HD on the boat, the outriggers snap on for fishing and snap off for transport in under a minute - no fiddling with bolts, no removed-and-loosened hardware to keep track of.

Floats with pre-installed brass inserts. Each float ships with 1/4"-20 brass thread inserts pre-molded into the float. The brass inserts let you bolt a RAILBLAZA StarPort HD directly to the float (the kit includes the StarPorts you need). Brass inserts are the right approach because: brass doesn't corrode in water, the thread engagement is strong enough for the loads outriggers see during fishing, and the molded-in installation means you're not relying on screws into bare foam (which work loose over time).

Boat-side install. The boat side of each outrigger uses a RAILBLAZA StarPort HD that you bolt to the kayak or canoe deck. Most kayak installs use the included installation hardware (typically self-tapping deck screws with sealant for sealed-hull plastic kayaks, or thru-hull bolts with backing washers for kayaks with deck access hatches). Canoe installs often require longer customer-supplied bolts to clear the canoe gunwale and a backing block inside the gunwale - check your specific canoe before ordering. Position the boat-side mount slightly aft of the seating position - the goal is to put the outrigger floats roughly at or slightly aft of your center of gravity, which gives the most stabilization for the least drag.

Mount front or rear. The outriggers can be installed in front of the seating position or behind it - personal preference and boat geometry determine the best location. Behind the seat is more common because: the floats don't interfere with paddling, sight lines forward are clear, and the floats sit closer to the natural rocking pivot point of the boat for maximum stabilization effect. Front mounting works for some specific use cases (sit-on-top kayaks with rear cargo wells where rear mounting interferes with the cargo deck), but is less common.

Removable design preserves transport. The whole point of using a kayak or canoe is the easy transport - on top of a car, in the back of a pickup, in the garage. Permanent stabilization solutions (sponsons or hull modifications) work but they add weight and bulk that defeats the transport advantage. The StandnCast outriggers solve this: snap off the outriggers, leave the StarPort HD bases on the boat, and you're back to the original easy-transport kayak or canoe shape. Re-snap when you launch. The whole transition is under a minute per side.

Float design and stability. The StandnCast floats are sized to provide meaningful stabilization without excessive drag during normal paddling. When the boat is level (you're sitting upright in calm water), both floats sit just at or slightly above the waterline - they're not in the water, so they're not adding paddling drag. When the boat starts to roll (you lean to one side, a wake hits, you stand up to cast), the float on the rolling-into side touches the water and provides buoyancy resistance against further roll. This is the right behavior - stabilization when you need it, no drag when you don't. Cheaper outrigger designs that keep the floats permanently in the water during normal paddling create constant drag that makes the kayak slower and harder to paddle.

Standing-and-casting use case. The StandnCast name reflects the primary use case: standing up in a fishing kayak to sight-cast at fish in shallow water (essential for sight-fishing redfish, snook, bonefish, bass in shallow weed beds). Without outriggers, sight-casting from a kayak is a constant balance act - you're managing balance while trying to track fish, present a lure, and react to strikes. With the outriggers deployed, you can stand and focus on the fishing rather than the balancing. For a saltwater flats angler or a freshwater bass angler working shallow weed beds, the StandnCast turns a marginal stand-up kayak into a competent stand-up fishing platform.

Other use cases. Beyond stand-up sight casting, the outriggers help in: choppy-water paddling (passenger comfort goes way up when the boat doesn't rock as much), kid-aboard paddling (parents fishing with small kids in the boat, where stability margin matters more), kayak fishing in tournament conditions (where you need to be fishing-focused not balance-focused), and just general comfort for paddlers who prefer a more stable ride.

Not for surf conditions. The StandnCast is explicitly NOT intended for surf launches or breaking-wave conditions. The outrigger arms aren't built to handle the loads of breaking surf, and the floats can catch wave energy in ways that'll flip the boat. For inshore flats, lakes, slow-moving rivers, and protected coastal water, the StandnCast is the right product. For surf launches or open-ocean conditions with breaking waves, you need a different boat or different stabilization approach.

Maintenance. Rinse with fresh water after saltwater use. Inspect the brass inserts in the floats periodically for damage or rust on adjacent hardware (rust on the StarPort screws is a sign of seawater contamination). Replace the StarPort hardware if it shows corrosion. The arms and floats themselves are essentially maintenance-free - clean them, store them out of UV, and they'll last many seasons.

1-year warranty. YakGear backs the StandnCast with a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects. Reasonable warranty term for a relatively simple mechanical accessory at this price point - the major failure modes (broken arm, cracked float, damaged StarPort) are rare under normal use and covered under the warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit my kayak?

The StandnCast outriggers fit nearly all sit-on-top fishing kayaks and most sit-inside kayaks - the boat-side StarPort HD bolts to any flat-ish deck surface that has clearance for the mounting bolts. Some sit-inside kayaks with deeply curved decks may need a custom mounting block to give the StarPort a flat base. For very narrow whitewater kayaks or specialty racing kayaks, the outriggers may not fit well - the design assumes a recreational / fishing kayak geometry.

What about my canoe?

Canoe install works but typically requires customer-supplied hardware. The included kayak hardware is often too short to clear a canoe gunwale, and canoes typically need a backing block inside the gunwale to spread the load. Get longer 1/4" bolts (length depends on your gunwale thickness) and a hardwood backing block, plus marine sealant, before starting the install. Total install time on a canoe is similar to a kayak - 30-60 minutes for both sides.

How fast can I remove them?

Under a minute per side once the StarPort HD bases are installed on the boat. Pop the outrigger arm out of the boat-side StarPort, do the same on the float-side StarPort, and the whole arm + float assembly comes off as a unit. Reverse the process to reinstall. The StarPort HD design is what makes this fast - tool-free snap-on / snap-off operation.

Do they slow down paddling?

Minimally. When the boat is level (you're sitting upright in calm water), both floats sit just at or slightly above the waterline so they're not adding paddling drag. When you lean or the water gets choppy, the floats engage the water on the rolling-into side and provide stabilization resistance - that's drag, but it's the drag you want for stability. Net: in normal calm-water paddling, drag is minimal. in choppy conditions, the slight drag is the price you pay for the stability that lets you keep fishing.

Can I stand up to cast?

Yes - that's the primary design intent (the StandnCast name reflects this). With both outriggers deployed, you can stand up in most fishing kayaks and sight-cast at fish in shallow water. The stability margin you get with outriggers turns marginal stand-up kayaks into competent stand-up platforms. For saltwater flats fishing (redfish, snook, bonefish), freshwater bass in shallow weed beds, or any sight-fishing application, the stand-up capability is the key benefit.

Front mount or rear mount?

Both work, but rear mount is more common. Rear mount: floats sit closer to the natural rocking pivot point of the boat for max stabilization, sight lines forward are clear, floats don't interfere with paddling stroke. Front mount: works for sit-on-top kayaks with rear cargo wells where you need to keep the cargo deck clear. Most owners go rear-mount unless they have a specific reason to mount forward.

What about saltwater?

Yes - the system handles saltwater. Brass inserts in the floats don't corrode. RAILBLAZA StarPort HD bases are UV-stable plastic that's saltwater-rated. Rinse with fresh water after each saltwater trip and inspect the StarPort screws periodically for corrosion (replace if you see rust). The arms themselves are aluminum and corrosion-resistant for typical recreational saltwater exposure.

Are they for surf launches?

No - explicitly not. The arms and floats aren't built to handle breaking surf loads, and the floats can catch wave energy in ways that flip the boat. For surf launches, use a different boat or stabilization approach. The StandnCast is for inshore flats, lakes, slow-moving rivers, and protected coastal water.

How are they removable for transport?

Pop the arms off the boat-side StarPort HD bases - the bases stay bolted to the boat, the arms and floats come off as removable units. Total removal under a minute per side. The boat goes back to its original kayak / canoe footprint for car-top transport, with just the small StarPort HD bases visible on the deck. Re-snap when you launch. The removable design is what makes the whole system work for owners who car-top their boats.

Will they hold a heavy person?

The outriggers stabilize against roll regardless of paddler weight - they don't 'hold' the paddler in any direct sense. The float buoyancy and arm strength handle typical paddler-roll loads up to and including heavy paddlers in the 250+ lb range. For very heavy paddlers (300+ lb) doing aggressive stand-up casting, consider whether the kayak itself has the stability margin you need before relying on outriggers - the outriggers help but they don't compensate for an inherently unstable boat.

What about kids and pets in the boat?

Yes - the outriggers help meaningfully when you're paddling with kids or dogs aboard. The added stability margin is exactly what you want when there's an unpredictable second occupant who might lean unexpectedly or move quickly. For kid-aboard or pet-aboard paddling, the StandnCast is one of the better safety / comfort upgrades you can make.

What's the warranty?

1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal recreational use. Service runs through YakGear's standard warranty support. Save the receipt for warranty service. The major failure modes (broken arm, cracked float, damaged StarPort) are rare under normal use and covered under the warranty.
