A VHF radio is essential safety and communication gear, and Standard Horizon is a respected leader in marine radios. The line covers fixed-mount VHF radios for the helm and rugged handheld VHF radios, many featuring Digital Selective Calling for one-touch distress alerts, some with built-in AIS to see and be seen by other vessels, and clear, reliable transmission with useful features. A VHF lets you hail other boats and bridges, call the Coast Guard in an emergency, and monitor weather, which a cell phone cannot reliably do offshore. Known for quality and value, Standard Horizon radios are a dependable choice for boaters who want reliable communication and safety.
Choosing the right radio comes down to fixed or handheld and the features you want. A fixed-mount radio gives more power and range with a proper antenna and is the primary choice for most boats, while a handheld adds portability and a backup. Look for DSC for safety, which needs your MMSI programmed, and consider a model with AIS to track nearby vessels. Confirm power, waterproof rating, and features. Review the product details before buying. With a Standard Horizon VHF aboard, you stay in touch and have a vital safety link.
A fixed-mount VHF gives more power and range with a proper antenna and is the primary radio for most boats, while a handheld is portable and makes a great backup or a primary on small boats. Many boaters carry both for range and redundancy.
Digital Selective Calling lets you send a one-touch digital distress alert with your position to the Coast Guard and nearby DSC radios. It requires programming your MMSI number and ideally a GPS connection. It is an important safety feature on a VHF radio.
AIS, Automatic Identification System, lets you see nearby vessels' positions and be seen by them, improving collision awareness. Some Standard Horizon radios include a built-in AIS receiver. It is valuable in busy or low-visibility waters. Confirm the feature on the model.
