What KeelGuard does

Every time you winch a boat onto a trailer, slide it off, or nose onto a beach, the keel drags and the gelcoat takes the hit. KeelGuard is a thick, abrasion-resistant strip that covers the keel from the bow back, so the wear lands on a replaceable guard instead of the hull. For a trailered or beached boat, it is cheap insurance against ugly keel wear and gelcoat repair. The urethane material is flexible enough to follow the curve of most keels yet hard enough to resist repeated contact with rollers, bunks, and sand.

Size it to your boat

KeelGuard comes in set lengths matched to boat length, commonly running from a few feet up to twelve feet and beyond. Pick the length that covers the part of the keel that contacts the trailer bunks, rollers, and ramp. Measure the keel run you want protected and choose the size that covers it without forcing a too-short piece. Longer guards give extra coverage for boats that sit on bunks at an angle or that see frequent beach use.

Pick a color to match

The guard comes in a range of colors so you can match or accent your hull. A close color match makes it nearly disappear, while a contrasting stripe is a look some owners prefer. Either way it is protecting the same way. Color choice does not affect adhesion or durability.

Surface prep is everything

KeelGuard uses a strong adhesive backing, and the bond is only as good as the prep. Clean the keel thoroughly, remove wax and residue, and follow the prep and temperature guidance so the guard stays put for years. A rushed, dirty install is the main reason a guard lifts at the edges. Work in temperatures above fifty degrees and allow full cure time before launching.

Protect the skeg too

SkegGuard shields the skeg on the lower unit, which takes a beating in shallow water and on the trailer. Match the SkegGuard to your engine brand and gearcase so it fits the skeg profile. Proper fit keeps the guard from interfering with steering or water flow.
