Dome or down light

A dome light mounts to the overhead and spreads broad even light across a cabin. It serves as the main source for general illumination. A down light is more focused. It works well for a galley counter, a chart table, or a reading spot where you want light aimed at a task. Many boats use dome lights for the main cabin and down lights at specific work areas.

Two color and dimming

Many Lumitec dome lights offer two color output in one fixture. White provides bright task light. Red or blue preserves night vision below decks and at the helm. Dimming lets you take the same fixture from full brightness down to a soft glow for relaxing at anchor. One light therefore covers several needs on a boat.

Flush or surface mount

Flush mount fixtures recess into the overhead for a clean built in look with no protrusion. They suit a finished headliner. Surface mounts sit on the overhead and are simpler to add to an existing boat without cutting a large hole. Lumitec offers adapter kits to convert between mounting styles on some fixtures. Check the kit if you are retrofitting an older boat.

Size the light to the space

A small cabin needs only a fixture or two. A larger salon benefits from several dome lights on a dimmer for even adjustable light. Plan the spacing so there are no dark corners. Group lights into zones so you can light the galley separately from the berth. This approach keeps the boat comfortable at night without wasting power.

Marine grade and low draw

Lumitec fixtures are sealed for the marine environment and built to last. They differ from auto or RV LEDs that corrode quickly in salt air.
