(2) Thicker arm - more material in the load-bearing arm to handle bending forces from extended outriggers under wind / wave loading. (3) Elongated base - longer base footprint that distributes mounting load across a wider area of the T-top, accommodating tops up to 4-1/2 inches thick (vs typical 4 inch on standard mounts). The XL upgrades matter when running 20+ foot outrigger poles in offshore conditions where the moment arm and dynamic loading exceed what the standard mount handles.

What boat sizes - and outrigger sizes - this is for. The GS-390XL is sized for boats 25-50 feet with hardtops, running outrigger poles up to typical TACO Deluxe Aluminum (18-21 ft) or Carbon Fiber Tele-Outrigger (20-24 ft) lengths. For smaller boats with shorter outrigger poles (under 16 ft), the standard GS-380 is adequate and a better value. Hardtop / T-top mount - the install design. The mount is designed to bolt through a fiberglass T-top, aluminum hardtop, or similar overhead structure on a center console or sportfisher. The base sits on top of the hardtop with the integrated mounting plate, and through-bolts extend down through the hardtop with backing plates on the underside for load distribution. Critical advantage: deploy and stow the outrigger poles from the deck without climbing on top of the T-top - safer and faster operation, especially in rough seas where standing on the T-top is dangerous. The crank handle is at deck operator height, easily reached from the cockpit or the front deck near the helm. Offset handle design - hand clearance matters.
