What's the maximum detection range?

Real-world range depends on target size, atmospheric ducting, weather conditions, and the radome's mounting height (higher mounts see further). For typical large vessel traffic, expect reliable detection out to 24+ NM. For weather cell tracking, the long-range capability is genuinely useful for staying ahead of approaching weather offshore.

What's the difference between a radome and an open-array antenna?

Radomes are enclosed in a weatherproof housing and use a slotted waveguide antenna inside the housing - compact, low-profile, low cost. Open arrays use an exposed bar-style antenna rotating in the open - bigger, more visible, more expensive, but achieve narrower beam widths (better target separation) due to the larger physical antenna size. Radomes are the right choice for recreational boats up to about 50 feet where physical size and aesthetics matter. Open arrays are the right choice for larger boats and serious offshore use where target separation matters more than antenna size.

What boat size is this radar right for?

Where should I mount it?

Highest practical location with clear 360-degree horizon. Mast top is ideal for sailboats. Radar arch or hardtop is typical for sportfish and motor boats. Mount at least 6-8 feet above where any person would stand (radar transmit power isn't ionizing radiation but you don't want people in the direct beam path). Verify clear 360-degree horizon coverage from the mounting location - any obstructions in the horizontal plane will create radar shadows where the radar can't see.

Does it work in heavy rain or fog?

Yes - one of the strengths of the HD Digital Adaptive Receiver. Rain and fog create radar clutter (lots of small returns from water droplets) that can mask actual targets.
