Airmar's flagship pocket-mount transducer for serious deep-water sport fishing. The CM599LH is Airmar's deep-water answer for boats chasing swordfish, tuna, grouper, tilefish, and anything else that lives below 1,000 feet. The transducer pairs a low-frequency element rated to push the picture out to 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) with a high-frequency element that holds resolution down to 1,500 feet (457 meters), which is the depth range most serious offshore sport-fishing operations live in. The CHIRP-ready dual-band design means you're not stuck on a single frequency: the low element can sweep anywhere from 28 to 60 kHz and the high element can sweep anywhere from 130 to 210 kHz, giving the chartplotter or sounder module the flexibility to dial the frequency for the depth and target you're working.

The low-frequency side is a 24-element ceramic array, which is the spec that buys you the deep-water performance. Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between this and the R509LH or R599LH?

Same Low+High element underneath, different housing and install. The CM599LH (this SKU) is pocket-mounted in a recessed pocket or welded tank in the hull. The R509LH is a thru-hull external with a stem that protrudes outside the hull. The R599LH is an in-hull (shoot-thru) variant that mounts inside the hull and shoots through the fiberglass. Pocket gives the best acoustic performance and the cleanest external profile but needs the pocket fabricated. Thru-hull is the standard offshore install. In-hull avoids cutting a hole at the cost of some sensitivity.

Why does it need 2-3 kW of sounder power?

Deep water. To return a usable picture from 5,000 to 10,000 feet down, the transducer needs enough transmit power to push the sound all the way to the bottom and have the echo make it back through the thermocline and back-scatter. 1 kW transducers run out of useful range at about 3,000 feet. The CM599LH is rated for the 2-3 kW sounder modules that serious deep-droppers run.

Does it work with my chartplotter?

It works with chartplotters or sounder modules that support CHIRP transducers in the 28-60 kHz low band and 130-210 kHz high band. That covers most current 2-3 kW sounder black boxes from the major marine electronics brands. The bare-wire pigtail on this SKU means you wire to the sounder's input terminals directly. How is the connector handled if this is bare wire?

You either wire directly to the sounder module's screw terminals (most 2-3 kW black boxes accept bare wire input), terminate the cable with a manufacturer-specific connector you source separately, or route through a junction box mid-cable. The bare-wire variant gives you flexibility for any install path. For plug-and-play with a standard Airmar pinout connector, the connector-equipped variant is the right SKU.

Can I install it without a fabricated pocket?

Not really. The pocket-mount configuration requires either a factory-cut depression in the hull or a welded aluminum tank for metal boats. Without a pocket you can't mount this variant correctly. If you don't have a pocket and don't want to have one fabricated, the R509LH thru-hull or R599LH in-hull variants of the same element are the right alternatives.

What boat size is it sized for?

8 meters (25 feet) and above according to Airmar. In practice the CM599LH ends up on sport-fishing boats 30 to 60 feet running serious offshore deep-drop operations. Smaller boats usually don't have the helm space and the budget for a 2-3 kW sounder module to drive this transducer, and they typically don't fish the depths where the CM599LH's range matters.

What depth can it really see?

Low frequency rated to 10,000 feet (3,048 meters), high frequency rated to 1,500 feet (457 meters). Real-world deep-water performance depends on bottom hardness, thermocline activity, and how much aeration is around the transducer. On a calm day in clear water over hard bottom, the low frequency picture stays sharp well past 5,000 feet.

What about the high-frequency beamwidth?

8 degrees at the low end of the band (130 kHz) down to 4 degrees at the high end (210 kHz). That's a tight cone, narrow enough to pick out individual fish stacked tight to structure at 800-1,200 feet. The narrow beam is the spec that makes the CM599LH so good at canyon-wall fishing where you want to see exactly where the fish are holding.

Does it include a temperature sensor?
