The Panoptix PS70 is the offshore-grade transducer in Garmin's live-sonar lineup. Where the smaller Panoptix transducers are shoot-thru-hull or trolling-motor-mounted units for inshore and bass fishing, the PS70 is a true bronze-and-stainless thru-hull built for boats that fish in 200 to 1,000 feet of water. The package ships with the fairing block, which is the wedge that hangs the transducer face flush to the water flow on a deadrise hull up to 20 degrees. Without a fairing block the transducer sits at the wrong angle on a V-hull and the beam shoots off to one side. With it, the beam points straight down at speed, which is what you need for the live-sonar modes to work the way Garmin designed them.
The defining feature of the PS70 is RapidReturn live imaging. The transducer fires and the chartplotter refreshes the image up to 10 times per second, which is fast enough that a school of tuna shows up as moving fish on screen rather than as a frozen still picture you have to interpret. That refresh rate is what separates Panoptix from traditional CHIRP sonar. Traditional CHIRP shows you what was below the boat a second ago. Panoptix shows you what's there right now, which on a deep-drop swordfish trip or a wreck dive means you see the bite as it happens.
Four sonar modes share the same beam. LiveVu Down is the headline mode, casting a 120-degree wide beam straight down and rendering live motion across that wide area. Triple-Beam Sonar splits the picture into port, straight-down, and starboard views so you can see fish on either side of the boat as you drift over structure. RealVu 3D Historical builds a 3D map of the bottom and water column as the boat moves, giving you a swimming-pool-style cutaway of the structure you've covered. Traditional Sonar mode runs the same beam as a conventional fish-arch display when that's what you want for target separation. Quickdraw Contours runs in the background and builds custom bathymetry maps of un-charted areas as you cruise.
The 800-watt transmit power and 190 to 210 kHz frequency band give the PS70 the energy to push the live picture out to 1,000 feet in saltwater, which is where most other live-sonar transducers run out of range. Built-in stabilization corrects for boat roll on the receive side, so the picture stays oriented to the bottom rather than waving with the swell. Power input is 10 to 35 volts DC at 35 watts typical usage, fused at 7.5 amps. The transducer connects to your chartplotter through a Garmin Marine Network port using the included 8-foot pigtail with a 40-foot extension. That's enough cable to run from a deep bilge thru-hull to a flybridge chartplotter in most boats up to about 50 feet.
One install note worth flagging. Thru-hull installation on a fiberglass cored hull needs to be done right. Cut the hole with the boat in the cradle, seal the core properly, bed the fairing block in 5200 or equivalent, and plan on a haul-out to do the job. The PS70 is not a transom-mount or a shoot-thru-hull transducer. If you want live sonar without cutting a hole in the boat, the Panoptix LiveScope LVS34 paired with a trolling motor mount is the inshore answer. The PS70's mission is offshore deep-drop work where you need the live picture deeper than the trolling-motor mounts can reach. One more consideration that comes up on PS70 installs. Boats that already have a CHIRP transducer punched through the hull (an Airmar B175 or similar) sometimes want to share the hole or add the PS70 right next to it. Don't do that. Two transducers operating at overlapping frequencies will cross-talk and ruin both pictures, even if they're nominally on different bands. The PS70 wants its own clear water away from other through-hull units, ideally at least 18 inches from the nearest transducer or wet exhaust port. The CWR catalog and Garmin's installation guide both call this out, and the marine installer community will tell you the same. If you're tight on belly room and can't get 18 inches of clearance, plan on swapping out the older transducer entirely when you add the PS70, not running both.

Frequently asked questions
Is the fairing block actually included?
Yes. The PS70 part number includes the fairing block in the box. The block is the angled wedge that mounts between the transducer and the hull to keep the beam pointing straight down at speed. Without it the transducer mounts flat to the hull and the beam shoots off-angle on any V-hull, which kills the live-sonar performance.
What deadrise angles will the fairing block handle?
Up to 20 degrees. That covers most modern sportfish and center-console hulls. If your deadrise is steeper than 20 degrees, the standard fairing block won't get the beam vertical, and you'll need a custom block or a different transducer location.
How deep can it actually see?
1,000 feet in saltwater is the Garmin spec. In practice the live-sonar picture stays sharp through 600 to 800 feet on most days, and the deepest 200 feet of the range depend on water clarity, bottom hardness, and how much thermocline activity is going on. For swordfish and deep-drop tilefish work, that range is usually enough.
What's the difference between the PS70 and the LiveScope LVS34?
Different missions. LVS34 is the forward-looking inshore live-sonar transducer that mounts on a trolling motor and shows you fish out in front of the boat in shallow water. The PS70 is a thru-hull that shoots straight down and is built for deep-water offshore work. If you're picking between them, the boat and the depth tell you which one to buy.
What chartplotter do I need to run it?
Any current Garmin chartplotter on the Garmin Marine Network with Panoptix support. The GPSMAP 7400, 8400, 8600, 9000 series and most echoMAP UHD2 units handle Panoptix. Older chartplotters without Panoptix support won't display the live modes even with the transducer wired correctly. Send us your chartplotter model and we'll confirm before you order.
Can I install this with the boat in the water?
No. Thru-hull installation requires drilling a hole through the hull, which is a haul-out job. Plan on the boat being out of the water for at least the cure cycle on the bedding compound (typically 24 to 48 hours). If your boat is on a lift you can sometimes do it without a full haul-out, but it's still a dry-bottom job.
Will it work at high boat speeds?
Live-sonar modes work best at slow trolling speeds (under 6 knots) where the picture stays stable. At cruising speeds the picture quality degrades because of cavitation and aeration around the transducer. Traditional sonar mode keeps working at speed for bottom finding. For boats that fish on the drift or troll slowly, that's not a limitation.
