The Humminbird HELIX 8 CHIRP MEGA SI+ GPS G4N CHO is the Control Head Only configuration of Humminbird's mid-tier 8-inch HELIX fish finder. CHO means the unit ships without the bundled transducer, letting you select the appropriate transducer for your specific installation requirements rather than getting a generic transducer that may not fit your needs.

Why the CHO configuration. The standard HELIX 8 bundle includes a transom-mount transducer that works for many installations but isn't always the right choice. The CHO configuration is the right buy when: (1) You want the MEGA 360 imaging transducer instead of standard sidescan - 360 imaging shows underwater imagery in all directions around the boat from a single transducer mounted on the bow, dramatically more useful for tournament-grade structure fishing than standard sidescan. (2) You have a compatible bow-mount trolling motor with built-in MEGA Imaging - the trolling motor's built-in transducer eliminates the need for any separate transducer install, cleaning up the boat significantly. (3) You're adding the HELIX 8 to an existing Humminbird-equipped boat where you already have sonar transducers installed on other units - the new HELIX 8 networks via Ethernet to share sonar data from the existing transducers without needing its own. (4) You want a thru-hull transducer for better sonar performance vs the standard transom-mount option. For any of these scenarios, the CHO configuration saves money (no unused bundled transducer) and gives you exactly the transducer you actually need.

The G4N generation. G4N (Generation 4 Networked) is the current HELIX generation as of recent years. The 'N' designation means the unit includes the full networking suite: NMEA 2000, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AND Ethernet. Older HELIX generations and the non-N variants lack one or more of these networking technologies (typically the Ethernet networking which is the upgrade for multi-display sonar sharing). For boats building a multi-unit Humminbird system or planning to add One-Boat Network integration, the G4N is the right tier choice.

MEGA Side Imaging+ and Down Imaging+ - what the + adds. The MEGA Imaging+ generation delivers two specific improvements over the original MEGA Imaging: 20% more detail (finer pixel-level resolution of underwater imagery, useful for identifying small fish and subtle structure features) and 60% more range/depth (extending the practical imaging range from about 125 feet to 200 feet on each side for Side Imaging+, and similar depth extension for Down Imaging+). The + improvements are most noticeable in real-world conditions where the older MEGA generation was at the edge of its range - features that were marginally visible on MEGA now appear with clarity on MEGA+.

Dual Spectrum CHIRP sonar. The traditional vertical-down sonar engine on the HELIX 8 with Humminbird's Dual Spectrum technology. Wide Mode (broader-frequency CHIRP) shows the maximum area below the boat for general fish-finding and bottom-mapping. AutoChart Live. The breakthrough custom-mapping feature that lets you create your own bathymetry maps in real time while you fish. As you drive the boat with the sonar running, the unit logs sonar depth data and builds a high-resolution custom contour map of the area you're fishing. The maps include depth contours, bottom hardness, and vegetation density - more detail than even premium pre-loaded charts. Standard configuration includes 8 hours of built-in recording time. For unlimited mapping capacity, the optional AutoChart Zero Line SD cards extend recording essentially indefinitely.
