Minn Kota Riptide Instinct QUEST 90/115 Saltwater Trolling Motor 72" — Product description

The Minn Kota Riptide Instinct QUEST 90/115 (MPN 1358581) is the saltwater-rated, big-water version of the Instinct QUEST trolling motor - dual-voltage 24/36V brushless construction, 90 lb thrust at 24V or 115 lb thrust at 36V, 72-inch shaft length sized for big offshore-style center consoles and deep-V hulls with raised foredecks. Black finish. The Riptide series is purpose-built for saltwater use with reinforced motor and mount, corrosion-resistant materials throughout, and the protection package needed for offshore conditions. Auto Stow & Deploy via wireless remote, foot pedal, mobile app, or compatible fish finder eliminates manual handling of the heavy trolling motor head. Power Trim adjusts motor depth at the press of a button. Advanced GPS trolling system: Spot-Lock with Jog (5-foot increments), Drift Mode for hands-free wind / current navigation, recorded paths, AutoPilot. Real-time battery monitoring with Eco-mode prompt at 20 percent. Digital Maximizer extends battery life up to 5x. Indestructible composite shaft guaranteed for life. One-Boat Network compatibility for mobile app and integrated fish-finder control. Includes wireless remote, lanyard, MKP-40 Prop, 30-foot Ethernet cable, sister-brand fish-finder adapter cable, and complete mounting hardware.

The Minn Kota Riptide Instinct QUEST 90/115 is the saltwater-rated, big-boat variant of the Instinct QUEST trolling motor line - the company's flagship rebuild of the iconic Instinct platform with full QUEST-series brushless drive, dual-voltage operation, advanced GPS, and Auto Stow & Deploy. The Riptide-series designation specifically means saltwater rating: reinforced motor and mount construction, corrosion-resistant materials throughout, and the protection package needed to actually survive offshore saltwater conditions year after year. For big offshore-style center consoles, deep-V hulls with raised foredecks, or any saltwater boat where the freshwater Instinct would corrode out within a season or two, the Riptide variant is the right call.

Big water, bigger boats. The 72-inch shaft length and 115-lb thrust capacity at 36V are sized for serious offshore boats running 21-26 foot LOA - bigger center consoles, deep-V offshore fishing platforms, large bay boats, and similar saltwater fishing vessels. For smaller boats, the 60-inch shaft variant is right. for typical 17-22 ft freshwater boats, the freshwater Instinct (or Ulterra) is the right choice instead of the Riptide. The Instinct platform isn't sized for typical small bass / walleye boats - this is purpose-built for the bigger water and bigger boats where Spot-Lock-class boat control matters most.

Dual voltage 24V / 36V flexibility. The 90/115 designation means the same motor delivers 90 pounds of thrust on 24V (two batteries in series) or 115 pounds on 36V (three batteries in series). Same motor, different battery configuration. For owners running 24V systems, you get 90 lb thrust now with the option to upgrade to 36V later for more thrust without buying a new motor. For owners already running 36V, the full 115 lb thrust is available immediately. The dual-voltage capability is one of the key practical differences vs older single-voltage Minn Kota motors - you don't outgrow this motor when you upgrade your battery system.

Brushless motor design. The QUEST series moves to brushless motors throughout. Three real benefits over the older brushed-motor design: longer service life (no brushes to wear out under saltwater corrosion conditions, motor life is effectively unlimited), better thermal performance (the brushless motor runs cooler at the same thrust output, which means sustained full-power operation without thermal cutout), and meaningfully higher efficiency (more thrust per amp drawn, longer fishing time per battery charge). For saltwater use specifically, the brushless design eliminates the brush-corrosion failure mode that's a leading killer of older saltwater trolling motors.

Reinforced motor and mount for offshore conditions. The Riptide series adds structural reinforcement to the motor body and the mounting bracket beyond the freshwater Instinct's spec - more material in the high-stress areas, stronger fasteners, more heavy-duty corrosion protection coatings. Why this matters: saltwater conditions add corrosive electrochemical attack to the mechanical loads the motor sees. Without the reinforced construction, the motor body and mount progressively weaken from the combined chemical and mechanical attack until eventually a failure occurs. The reinforced Riptide construction handles years of saltwater use without that progressive failure.

72-inch shaft - sized for big-water bows. The 72-inch shaft length is the longest in the Instinct line - sized for boats with very tall bow heights above the waterline, typical of larger offshore center consoles (which sit higher in the water for offshore performance), deep-V hulls with raised foredecks, and big bay boats. For typical bow heights up to 25-26 inches above the waterline, the 72-inch shaft is correct. For shorter bow heights, the 60-inch variant is the right call. Match shaft length to bow height for the right prop depth (4-6 inches below the waterline when deployed).

Auto Stow & Deploy. The signature Instinct feature - press a button on the wireless remote, foot pedal, mobile app, or compatible fish finder, and the motor automatically lifts itself into stowed position or deploys back into the water. For older trolling motors without auto-stow, deploying the heavy 70+ lb motor head required manually pulling a release rope and lowering by hand - awkward at the best of times, dangerous in rough water. Auto stow / deploy eliminates that work entirely and lets you stow / deploy from anywhere on the boat without leaving the helm. For saltwater use specifically, this also means you can stow the motor when running between spots to keep saltwater out of the lower unit (extending motor life) and deploy quickly when arriving at the next fishing location.

Power Trim. The same button-press control extends to motor trim - raise or lower the motor depth without bending over to grab the shaft. Critical for adjusting prop depth as conditions change (deeper in chop, shallower over weedy bottom), and for raising the motor to clear obstructions during travel without fully stowing. Trim from the foot pedal, the remote, the app, or a compatible fish finder.

Advanced GPS trolling system. The QUEST series uses GPS for full automated boat positioning. Features: Spot-Lock (motor uses GPS to hold the boat in a fixed location regardless of wind / current - press the button at a productive fishing spot, the motor takes over and keeps you there), Spot-Lock with Jog (move the locked position 5 feet in any direction with one button press), Recorded Paths (record a productive trolling path and replay it identically), AutoPilot (motor maintains a constant heading regardless of wind / current), and constant-speed control independent of wind / current.

Drift Mode. The newest of the QUEST GPS features - Drift Mode lets you specify a drift direction and speed, and the motor automatically maintains that drift even in heavy wind and current. For inshore saltwater anglers (redfish, snook, trout) who fish drifting techniques across grass flats or oyster reefs, Drift Mode replaces the need for drift socks, kicker motors, or constant manual rudder management. Point-and-shoot navigation across any wind / current conditions.

Eco mode for extended battery life. When battery levels reach 20 percent, the system prompts you to enter Eco-mode, which reduces current draw to extend the remaining run time. The eco mode trades some thrust capability for meaningfully longer runtime - useful for getting back to the launch when batteries are running low or for stretching the fishing day when conditions are mild and full thrust isn't needed.

Digital Maximizer. The motor's variable-speed control delivers exactly the current the prop needs at the commanded speed - older trolling motors used pulse-width-modulation that wasted energy at lower speeds. Digital Maximizer reduces wasted energy and provides up to 5 times longer runtime per battery charge at lower speeds. For typical fishing where most of the day is spent at 1-3 mph speeds, Digital Maximizer is the feature that lets you fish all day on one charge.

Indestructible composite shaft. The shaft is built from Minn Kota's indestructible composite material (a glass / carbon composite) that takes hits from submerged structure, oysters, and dock pilings without breaking. Minn Kota guarantees the composite shaft for life. For saltwater use specifically, the composite is also dramatically more corrosion-resistant than aluminum shafts - no galvanic corrosion concerns at the shaft / lower unit interface.

One-Boat Network and mobile app. The Instinct integrates with the One-Boat Network ecosystem - the connectivity standard that ties the trolling motor, compatible fish finders, and mobile app into one integrated system. Control speed, steering, Spot-Lock, AutoPilot from your iOS or Android device via the mobile app. Update motor software over the network. For boats running compatible fish finder displays, the trolling motor controls also appear on the fish finder for integrated single-screen operation.

What's included. The kit ships with the Instinct 90/115 motor and 72-inch shaft, the wireless remote with backlit LCD, the lanyard for the remote, the MKP-40 prop (sized for the 36V high-thrust application), a 30-foot Ethernet cable for One-Boat Network connectivity, a sister-brand HELIX-series fish finder adapter cable for direct integration with compatible MEGA Imaging fish finders, and the complete mounting hardware kit. For owners with the right fish finder, this is genuinely plug-and-play out of the box.

Saltwater rated. The Riptide series is specifically designed and tested for saltwater use - the corrosion package, sealed motor housing, waterproof connectors, and reinforced construction all handle continuous saltwater exposure. Rinse with fresh water after each saltwater trip - rinse the motor body, prop, and underside especially. Inspect prop / skeg / fasteners periodically for galvanic corrosion. Properly maintained, the Riptide will outlast multiple freshwater motors used in equivalent conditions.

Install. Mount the bow-side bracket to the boat's bow using the supplied hardware (longer bolts may be needed for very thick bow plates - source from any marine fastener supplier). Wire the trolling motor to the 24V or 36V battery bank via heavy-gauge marine-grade tinned cable (Minn Kota recommends 6 AWG for 24V or 4 AWG for 36V at typical run lengths) through an appropriate circuit breaker. Connect the One-Boat Network Ethernet cable to compatible fish finders if running integration. Pair the wireless remote and the mobile app to the motor via Bluetooth. Total install runs 4-8 hours depending on boat complexity. For complex installations or owners not comfortable with marine-grade DC wiring at this current level, professional install at a marine shop is the right call.

Frequently asked questions

Riptide vs freshwater Instinct - what's the difference?

Three real differences. Material spec: Riptide uses corrosion-resistant alloys and coatings throughout designed to handle continuous saltwater exposure. Reinforcement: Riptide adds structural reinforcement at high-stress points to handle the combined mechanical and electrochemical attack of saltwater use. Sealing: Riptide motor housing and connectors are upgraded for saltwater immersion. Net: the Riptide will survive saltwater service for years. the freshwater Instinct corrodes out within 1-2 seasons of saltwater use.

Will the 72-inch shaft fit my boat?

72 inches is the longest shaft in the Instinct line, sized for boats with very tall bow heights above the waterline (typical of larger offshore center consoles, deep-V hulls with raised foredecks, big bay boats with elevated decks). For typical bow heights up to 25-26 inches above the waterline, this shaft length is correct. For shorter bow heights, the 60-inch variant is the right call. Measure your bow height (waterline to trolling motor mount surface) and target 4-6 inches of prop depth below the waterline when deployed.

What's the difference between 90 lb and 115 lb thrust?

Same motor. 90 lb is when wired for 24V (two batteries in series). 115 lb is when wired for 36V (three batteries in series). The dual-voltage design lets you start on 24V and upgrade to 36V later by adding a third battery, no new motor needed. For boats over 21 feet or in heavy wind / current, the 36V / 115 lb config is the right call. For smaller boats or calmer conditions, 24V / 90 lb is plenty.

What's Auto Stow & Deploy?

Push a button on the wireless remote, foot pedal, mobile app, or compatible fish finder, and the motor automatically lifts itself into stowed position or deploys back into the water. Eliminates the manual rope-pull deployment that older trolling motors required. For saltwater use specifically, this also lets you stow the motor when running between spots to keep saltwater out of the lower unit, extending motor life vs continuously running the motor in saltwater.

What's Spot-Lock?

Spot-Lock uses GPS to hold the boat in a fixed location regardless of wind and current. Press the button at a productive fishing spot, the motor takes over and keeps you precisely there - typical accuracy is within a few feet of the original location. For inshore saltwater fishing over isolated structure (oyster reefs, channel edges, dock pilings), Spot-Lock replaces traditional anchoring entirely. Spot-Lock with Jog lets you move the locked position 5 feet in any direction with one button press.

What's Drift Mode?

Drift Mode lets you specify a drift direction and speed, and the motor automatically maintains that drift in wind and current. Replaces drift socks, kicker motors, and constant manual rudder management for drift-fishing techniques. For inshore saltwater anglers fishing grass flats, Drift Mode is the killer GPS feature - the motor handles boat positioning while you focus on fishing.

How long do batteries last?

Depends on capacity and how hard you run the motor. Typical 36V battery banks (three 100Ah lithium or AGM batteries) give 4-8 hours of fishing-level use per charge. The Eco-mode at 20 percent battery extends runtime when batteries are getting low. Brushless motor efficiency plus Digital Maximizer combine for meaningfully longer runtime than older brushed motors at the same battery capacity.

Can I use lithium batteries?

Yes - the QUEST series is compatible with LiFePO4 lithium battery banks. The brushless motor and variable-speed control work fine with lithium chemistry. Use lithium batteries with built-in BMS (battery management system) for proper protection. For saltwater use, lithium gives you 1/3 the weight, 2-3x cycle life, and faster recharge than equivalent AGM at substantial upfront cost.

What's included in the kit?

Instinct 90/115 motor with 72-inch shaft, wireless remote with backlit LCD, lanyard for remote, MKP-40 prop, 30-foot Ethernet cable for One-Boat Network connectivity, sister-brand HELIX-series fish finder adapter cable, complete mounting hardware kit. For owners with compatible fish finders, this is genuinely plug-and-play out of the box.

What about cable size and breaker?

For 36V / 115 lb thrust operation, use 4 AWG marine-grade tinned cable from the battery bank to the trolling motor for runs under 8 feet. For 24V operation, 6 AWG is sufficient. Use a 60A circuit breaker on the positive side near the battery bank. Don't share the trolling motor circuit with other heavy loads - voltage drop on shared circuits causes the motor to operate at reduced performance.

What about saltwater maintenance?

Rinse with fresh water after each saltwater trip - rinse the motor body, prop, and especially the underside where the prop meets the lower unit. Inspect the prop / skeg / fasteners periodically for galvanic corrosion. Replace sacrificial anodes if equipped when 50 percent consumed. Properly maintained, the Riptide will outlast multiple freshwater motors used in equivalent conditions - the saltwater protection package is what justifies the cost premium over the freshwater Instinct.

What's the warranty?

Standard Minn Kota warranty terms apply - typically 2 years on the motor with extended coverage on QUEST premium components like the brushless motor and the indestructible composite shaft (lifetime). Service runs through the Minn Kota authorized service network. Save the receipt and original packaging if practical for warranty service.
