Minn Kota Riptide Instinct QUEST 90/115 Saltwater Trolling Motor 72"

The Minn Kota Riptide Instinct QUEST 90/115 is the saltwater-rated, big-boat variant of the Instinct QUEST trolling motor line - the company's flagship rebuild of the iconic Instinct platform with full QUEST-series brushless drive, dual-voltage operation, advanced GPS, and Auto Stow & Deploy. The Riptide-series designation specifically means saltwater rating: reinforced motor and mount construction, corrosion-resistant materials throughout, and the protection package needed to actually survive offshore saltwater conditions year after year. For big offshore-style center consoles, deep-V hulls with raised foredecks, or any saltwater boat where the freshwater Instinct would corrode out within a season or two, the Riptide variant is the right call.

Big water, bigger boats. The 72-inch shaft length and 115-lb thrust capacity at 36V are sized for serious offshore boats running 21-26 foot LOA - bigger center consoles, deep-V offshore fishing platforms, large bay boats, and similar saltwater fishing vessels. For smaller boats, the 60-inch shaft variant is right. for typical 17-22 ft freshwater boats, the freshwater Instinct (or Ulterra) is the right choice instead of the Riptide. The Instinct platform isn't sized for typical small bass / walleye boats - this is purpose-built for the bigger water and bigger boats where Spot-Lock-class boat control matters most.

Dual voltage 24V / 36V flexibility. The 90/115 designation means the same motor delivers 90 pounds of thrust on 24V (two batteries in series) or 115 pounds on 36V (three batteries in series). Same motor, different battery configuration. For owners running 24V systems, you get 90 lb thrust now with the option to upgrade to 36V later for more thrust without buying a new motor. For owners already running 36V, the full 115 lb thrust is available immediately. The dual-voltage capability is one of the key practical differences vs older single-voltage Minn Kota motors - you don't outgrow this motor when you upgrade your battery system.

Brushless motor design. The QUEST series moves to brushless motors throughout. Three real benefits over the older brushed-motor design: longer service life (no brushes to wear out under saltwater corrosion conditions, motor life is effectively unlimited), better thermal performance (the brushless motor runs cooler at the same thrust output, which means sustained full-power operation without thermal cutout), and meaningfully higher efficiency (more thrust per amp drawn, longer fishing time per battery charge). For saltwater use specifically, the brushless design eliminates the brush-corrosion failure mode that's a leading killer of older saltwater trolling motors.

Reinforced motor and mount for offshore conditions. The Riptide series adds structural reinforcement to the motor body and the mounting bracket beyond the freshwater Instinct's spec - more material in the high-stress areas, stronger fasteners, more heavy-duty corrosion protection coatings. Why this matters: saltwater conditions add corrosive electrochemical attack to the mechanical loads the motor sees. Without the reinforced construction, the motor body and mount progressively weaken from the combined chemical and mechanical attack until eventually a failure occurs. The reinforced Riptide construction handles years of saltwater use without that progressive failure.

72-inch shaft - sized for big-water bows. The 72-inch shaft length is the longest in the Instinct line - sized for boats with very tall bow heights above the waterline, typical of larger offshore center consoles (which sit higher in the water for offshore performance), deep-V hulls with raised foredecks, and big bay boats. For typical bow heights up to 25-26 inches above the waterline, the 72-inch shaft is correct. For shorter bow heights, the 60-inch variant is the right call. Match shaft length to bow height for the right prop depth (4-6 inches below the waterline when deployed).

Auto Stow & Deploy. The signature Instinct feature - press a button on the wireless remote, foot pedal, mobile app, or compatible fish finder, and the motor automatically lifts itself into stowed position or deploys back into the water. For older trolling motors without auto-stow, deploying the heavy 70+ lb motor head required manually pulling a release rope and lowering by hand - awkward at the best of times, dangerous in rough water. Auto stow / deploy eliminates that work entirely and lets you stow / deploy from anywhere on the boat without leaving the helm. For saltwater use specifically, this also means you can stow the motor when running between spots to keep saltwater out of the lower unit (extending motor life) and deploy quickly when arriving at the next fishing location.

Power Trim. The same button-press control extends to motor trim - raise or lower the motor depth without bending over to grab the shaft. Digital Maximizer. The motor's variable-speed control delivers exactly the current the prop needs at the commanded speed - older trolling motors used pulse-width-modulation that wasted energy at lower speeds. Digital Maximizer reduces wasted energy and provides up to 5 times longer runtime per battery charge at lower speeds. For typical fishing where most of the day is spent at 1-3 mph speeds, Digital Maximizer is the feature that lets you fish all day on one charge.

Indestructible composite shaft. The shaft is built from Minn Kota's indestructible composite material (a glass / carbon composite) that takes hits from submerged structure, oysters, and dock pilings without breaking. Minn Kota guarantees the composite shaft for life. For saltwater use specifically, the composite is also dramatically more corrosion-resistant than aluminum shafts - no galvanic corrosion concerns at the shaft / lower unit interface.

Saltwater rated.
