Minn Kota Traxxis 80 Transom Trolling Motor 24V 80LB 42" — Product description

The Minn Kota Traxxis 80 is the 24V, 80-pound thrust transom-mount tiller trolling motor for serious freshwater anglers running aluminum boats, jon boats, and small fiberglass hulls who want hand-steer control instead of a bow-mount setup. 42-inch composite shaft, tilt/extend tiller, Digital Maximizer for full-day battery life, and the heavy-duty metal transom bracket sized for the 80-lb thrust.

The Minn Kota Traxxis 80 is the high-thrust transom-mount tiller trolling motor for freshwater anglers who run hand-steer setups on aluminum boats, jon boats, and small fiberglass hulls. 80 pounds of thrust on 24V, a 42-inch composite shaft, and the Traxxis tiller-control package that's been a staple of transom-mount fishing for years. If you don't want or need a bow-mount with GPS Spot-Lock and a remote, this is the motor that does the basic job of moving and steering the boat from the back, well.

What a transom-mount tiller motor does that a bow-mount doesn't. You stand or sit at the stern with your hand on the tiller, controlling steering, speed, and on/off directly. No remote to lose overboard, no GPS to wait for, no batteries in the remote to die. Hand-steer is the right control for boats up to 17 feet that fish from the stern, for kayak fishing where you're sitting in the seat near the motor, for jon boats where the bow is too narrow for a bow-mount, and for tournament guys who want a backup motor independent of their bow-mount system.

The 80-lb thrust is the high end of the Traxxis line and gives you genuine pushing power. On a typical 16-foot aluminum boat with two anglers and gear, the Traxxis 80 will push you against meaningful wind and current at speeds your old 40 or 55-lb motor wouldn't touch. On a smaller jon boat, you have headroom to spare. The 24V power is the price you pay for that thrust: you need two batteries instead of one, and the install weight goes up. For boats that genuinely need 80 lb of push, it's worth it.

The 42-inch shaft is the right length for boats with a transom height of around 14 to 18 inches. Most small aluminum boats and jon boats fall in that range. If your transom is taller, look at the longer 52-inch Traxxis 80 (different SKU). If your transom is shorter, the 42 still works fine. You just have more shaft below the cavitation plate than you need.

The Tilt/Extend Tiller is the ergonomic feature that separates the Traxxis from cheaper transom motors. The tiller tilts up to 45 degrees so you can adjust the grip angle to whatever's comfortable for your sitting or standing position. It also extends up to 6 inches so you can reach it from the bow seat or center seat without leaning back to the stern. Adjustments are tool-free. A digital battery indicator on the head of the tiller shows charge state at a glance.

One-Hand Stow is the small but excellent install detail. To stow the motor, just pull up and forward. No buttons, no release lever, no fiddling. To deploy, use the easy-access thumb release. The motor locks into any of ten different deploy positions so you can match the depth to the water you're fishing. After a season of use you stop noticing the stow mechanism, which is the highest compliment a piece of marine hardware can earn.

Steering Tension Control is the collar above the mount that lets you tighten or loosen the steering resistance to your preference. Loose for effortless steering when you're working a precise drift. Tight to lock the motor in place against current or wind, which also lets you stow the motor truly vertical against the transom for trailering or storage.

Quick-Cam Depth Adjuster is the cam-lock collar that lets you change the trim depth of the motor with one hand. When you find your spot you lock it in and the motor stays put against vibration and water flow. When you want to switch depths for a different fishing pattern, unlock and slide.

Digital Maximizer is the variable-speed power management system that's been a Minn Kota staple for years. It draws only the amperage you need at the speed you set instead of dumping full power at every notch. On a 24V Traxxis 80, anglers running two Group 27 or Group 31 deep-cycle batteries typically get a full day of fishing on a single charge for typical freshwater work. Push-to-Test Battery Meter on the motor head shows charge state at a glance.

The Power Prop is the standard 3-5/8 inch diameter prop on the Traxxis line. It bites well in open water and pushes through moderate weed cover without binding. If you fish heavy hydrilla, milfoil, or matted vegetation, a weedless prop pattern is a common upgrade.

The composite shaft is a Minn Kota exclusive backed by a lifetime guarantee against breakage. Composite gives you flex on impact instead of bending or snapping, which is exactly what you want when you bump a stump or a rock at idle. The transom bracket on the 80-lb 24V Traxxis is the larger metal version with a fold-away clamp knob, sized for the higher thrust of this model and not interchangeable with the smaller plastic bracket on the lower-thrust Traxxis units.

Install. Clamp the motor to the transom using the included bracket. Run dedicated 8 AWG tinned marine wire from each battery to the motor with proper fusing, wired in series for 24V. Most owners do the install in well under an hour. The motor itself is a one-person lift to set on the transom (about 40 pounds shipping weight, somewhat less for the unit itself).

Lifetime warranty on the indestructible composite shaft. Standard Minn Kota warranty on the motor itself. Same-day shipping before 3 PM ET on in-stock units.

Frequently asked questions

What size boat is the Traxxis 80 right for?

It's sized for freshwater aluminum boats, jon boats, and small fiberglass hulls in the 14 to 17 foot range that fish from the stern with hand-steer control. The 80 lb thrust is enough to push two anglers and gear against meaningful wind and current. On smaller boats it's more thrust than you need. Consider the Traxxis 55 or 70 instead. On larger boats you'll want a bow-mount.

Why a transom-mount tiller instead of a bow-mount with a remote?

Three reasons. First, hand-steer control: you stand or sit at the stern with your hand on the tiller, no remote to lose overboard. Second, simpler install: clamps to the transom in minutes, no bow rebuild required. Third, lower cost: no GPS, no Spot-Lock, no remote electronics. For small boats, kayak fishing, jon boats, or backup motor scenarios, the transom tiller is the right choice. For serious bass tournament fishing or hands-free GPS positioning, a bow-mount makes more sense.

How long is the shaft and what transom height does it suit?

The shaft is 42 inches. That length suits transoms in the 14 to 18 inch height range, which covers most small aluminum boats and jon boats. For taller transoms, the longer 52-inch Traxxis 80 is the right pick (separate SKU). For shorter transoms, the 42 still works fine. You just have more shaft below the cavitation plate than you need.

Why 24V instead of 12V?

You need 24V to deliver 80 lb of thrust efficiently. A 12V motor that tried to push that much thrust would draw way too much current, get hot, and run down a single battery quickly. 24V splits the current load across two batteries in series and lets the motor run cool and efficient. The trade-off is install weight and battery cost. For 80 lb thrust, 24V is the right call.

What batteries do I need?

Two 12V deep-cycle marine batteries wired in series for 24V. Group 27 or Group 31 batteries are the standard pairing. Match the two batteries (same brand, same model, same age) so they discharge and charge in sync. Pair them with a quality on-board 24V charger so you're ready the next morning.

What size wire from the batteries?

8 AWG tinned marine wire is the minimum for the typical transom run on 24V. Keep the run as short as you can. Wire from the negative terminal of one battery to the negative of the other, the positive of the first to the negative of the second, and the positive of the second to the motor (series wiring). Use proper fusing at the battery end of the run.

Can I use this in saltwater?

No. The Traxxis is built for freshwater only. It does not have the multi-stage corrosion treatment that the Riptide line has. If you fish brackish or salt regularly, look at the Minn Kota Riptide Transom 80, which is the saltwater version with proper corrosion protection.

What's the Tilt/Extend Tiller for?

The tiller tilts up to 45 degrees so you can adjust grip angle to whatever's comfortable for your sitting or standing position, and it extends up to 6 inches so you can reach it from the center or bow seat without leaning back to the stern. Adjustments are tool-free. A digital battery indicator on the tiller head shows charge state at a glance.

What does the Steering Tension Control do?

It's a collar above the mount that lets you tighten or loosen the steering resistance. Loose for effortless steering when you're working a precise drift. Tight to lock the motor in place against current or wind, which also lets you stow the motor truly vertical against the transom for trailering and storage.

What's the One-Hand Stow?

To stow the motor, just pull up and forward. No buttons, no release lever, no fiddling. To deploy, use the easy-access thumb release. The motor locks into any of ten different positions so you can match the depth to the water you're fishing. After a season you stop noticing it, which is the highest compliment a piece of marine hardware can earn.

What prop comes on the motor?

The Power Prop, 3-5/8 inch diameter. It bites well in open water and moderate weed cover. If you fish heavy hydrilla, milfoil, or matted vegetation, a weedless prop pattern is a common upgrade. Includes prop pin, nut, and washer.

How long is the warranty?

Lifetime guarantee on the indestructible composite shaft against breakage. Standard Minn Kota warranty on the motor itself. Service runs through the Minn Kota authorized service network in the U.S.
