Minn Kota PowerDrive 70 Trolling Motor with Foot Pedal 24V 70LB 60" — Product description

The Minn Kota PowerDrive 70 with electric foot pedal (part 1358473) is the freshwater bow-mount trolling motor for 19-22 foot boats: 24 volts, 70 pounds of thrust, 60-inch composite shaft, side-to-side electric foot pedal included (18-ft waterproof cord), AutoPilot heading-hold, Digital Maximizer for 5x run time per charge, push-to-test battery meter, MKP-37 Power Prop, and the Deploy-Assist lever. The right step-up trolling motor for boats too big for the 55 lb / 12V PowerDrive but where the cost of GPS-equipped Spot-Lock motors isn't justified yet.</p>

The Minn Kota PowerDrive 70 with foot pedal (part 1358473) is the freshwater bow-mount trolling motor for 19-22 foot fishing boats: 70 pounds of thrust on 24 volts, 60-inch composite shaft, side-to-side electric foot pedal control with 18-foot waterproof cord, AutoPilot heading-hold, Digital Maximizer for long battery life, and the Deploy-Assist lever for one-handed launching. The right thrust-class step-up from the 55 lb / 12V PowerDrive when your boat needs more power for confident position-holding against wind and current.

What 70 lb / 24V is right for. 70 lb of thrust on 24 volts suits 19-22 foot freshwater fishing boats, larger bass boats, multi-species boats, and walleye boats up to about 2800 lb fully loaded. The Minn Kota guideline of 5 lb per 200 lb boat weight makes the 70 lb PowerDrive a good match for the 2800 lb class. 24V (two 12V batteries in series) doubles the available motor wattage compared to 12V without doubling current draw, which means smaller-gauge cable runs and longer per-charge run time. For boats over 22 feet, step up to the 80 lb Riptide or the higher-feature Terrova / Ultrex. For smaller boats, the 55 lb / 12V PowerDrive saves money.

Side-to-side electric foot pedal. The included PowerDrive electric foot pedal sits on the bow deck with side-to-side steering control (tilt left to steer left, tilt right to steer right - intuitive natural ergonomic - it's the modern standard), variable-speed control via the rotary speed dial, and momentary / constant on / off via the integrated buttons. 18-foot waterproof cord runs from the pedal to the trolling motor's pedal port. Plug-and-play install, no wiring required. Choose where on the bow deck to mount the pedal for the best ergonomics for your fishing style.

AutoPilot heading-hold. AutoPilot maintains a chosen heading regardless of wind side-load. Set the heading by pointing the motor where you want to go, tap AutoPilot on, the motor holds the heading. Useful for making a long pass over structure or along a shoreline without constant steering corrections. Tap AutoPilot off to return to manual steering. Note: AutoPilot is direction-hold only, not GPS Spot-Lock - the boat still drifts forward / back / sideways with current and wind. For full GPS-anchor capability, you need a Spot-Lock-equipped motor (the GPS PowerDrive variants or the higher Terrova / Ultrex lines).

Digital Maximizer for 5x run time. The microprocessor-controlled motor controller delivers exactly the motor power needed for the speed setting you've dialed in, instead of the constant-current resistor system on older non-Digital trolling motors. The result: up to 5 times longer run time per battery charge at typical low-to-mid speed settings. For typical fishing-day use at speed settings 3-5, two Group 31 deep-cycle AGM batteries support 8-12 hours of mixed running.

Power steering. The motor steers via electric power-steering, not via direct cable pull. Steering effort at the foot pedal stays light regardless of motor load (the motor handles the actual steering work). The light effort matters during long days on the water where heavy steering pedal effort would tire you out.

Push-to-test battery meter. Tap the button on top of the trolling motor and you'll see the LED bar shows current battery state. Quick check without reaching for the chartplotter or head unit. Useful for deciding whether to head back to the launch or fish another hour.

MKP-37 Power Prop. The PowerDrive ships with the MKP-37 Power Prop, the open-water optimized prop in the Minn Kota line. Right blade geometry for pushing the boat efficiently in open water and through normal current. For weed-heavy water (lily pads, submerged grass, floating algae), the Weedless Wedge 2 (MKP-33) prop is the better swap-in choice (sold separately). For typical open-water bass and walleye fishing, the included Power Prop is the right standard.

Indestructible composite shaft, lifetime guaranteed. The composite material flexes under impact rather than bending or breaking. Hit a stump, run aground, take an impact, and the shaft springs back to straight. Minn Kota guarantees the composite shaft for life: if it ever bends or breaks under normal use, they replace it for free. Shaft failure is the most common reason older trolling motors get scrapped. The lifetime guarantee removes that as a concern.

Deploy-Assist lever. The patented Deploy-Assist lever in the PowerDrive bow mount cuts the manual lifting effort of stow / deploy in half. With the trolling motor's full weight on the lever, the unassisted stow is a real workout. you don't want to lift it without help. The Deploy-Assist mechanism reduces the manual lifting force to where one hand handles it easily. For solo anglers who launch and load alone, the Deploy-Assist is meaningful daily quality of life.

Cool, quiet lower unit. The lower unit (the part that sits in the water with the prop) is engineered to run cool under sustained load (lower operating temperature = longer service life) and to operate quietly (low motor noise transmitted through the water means less spooked fish in shallow water). For inshore flats fishing where stealth matters, the quiet operation is meaningful.

Bolt-on bow mount. The PowerDrive mounts to the bow deck via the included bolt-on mount plate. Drill the four mount holes (or use existing trolling motor mount holes if upgrading from a previous Minn Kota), bolt the mount plate to the deck, secure the trolling motor to the mount plate. The mount is built to take a beating: tough materials, sleek profile, designed to survive years of vibration and impact loading.

What's in the box. PowerDrive 70 lb 60-inch motor with electric power-steering, side-to-side electric foot pedal with 18-foot waterproof cord, MKP-37 Power Prop, bolt-on bow mount and mounting hardware. Required separately: two 12V deep-cycle marine batteries (sold separately), 6-AWG (or heavier) battery cable, 60A inline circuit breaker.

Frequently asked questions

Is 70 lb the right size for my boat?

70 lb of thrust on 24V suits 19-22 ft freshwater fishing boats up to about 2800 lb fully loaded. The Minn Kota guideline: 5 lb of thrust per 200 lb of fully-loaded boat weight. For boats under 19 ft (small bass boats, jon boats), the 55 lb / 12V PowerDrive saves money. For boats over 22 ft or for big-water use, step up to the 80 lb / 24V or 112 lb / 36V trolling motors. Match the thrust to the boat for the right balance of power and cost.

What's the difference vs. PowerDrive 55?

Higher thrust (70 lb vs. 55 lb), bigger battery requirement (24V vs. 12V), longer shaft option (60-inch typical vs. 54-inch typical), and slightly higher current draw (42A max vs. 50A max - the 70 lb on 24V actually draws less per pound of thrust due to the 24V efficiency advantage). The 70 lb is the next thrust-class step up - meaningful difference in position-holding capability against wind and current on bigger boats.

What batteries do I need?

Two 12-volt deep-cycle marine batteries wired in series for 24V. Group 27 or Group 31 deep-cycle AGM (typical 100-110 Ah each) is the cost-effective long-life option. 12V LiFePO4 lithium gives more usable amp-hours per pound and faster recharge but costs more. Don't use starting batteries - they aren't designed for the deep-discharge cycles trolling motor use puts them through. Wire in series, not parallel.

How long does it run on a charge?

Depends on speed setting and battery capacity. Typical fishing-day use at speed settings 3-5 with two Group 31 deep-cycle AGM batteries: 8-12 hours of mixed running. At full thrust the same setup runs about 1-2 hours. Digital Maximizer makes a real difference at low-to-mid speed settings, where the PowerDrive draws much less current than a non-Digital trolling motor at the same speed.

Does it have GPS / Spot-Lock?

No. The standard PowerDrive 70 with foot pedal doesn't include GPS or Spot-Lock. AutoPilot heading-hold (which it does have) maintains direction but not position - the boat still drifts with current and wind. For full GPS-anchor capability (Spot-Lock), see the PowerDrive 70 with GPS variant (different part number) or step up to the higher Terrova / Ultrex GPS-equipped lines.

Does it come with the foot pedal?

Yes. The side-to-side electric foot pedal is included in the box (18-foot waterproof cord). The pedal handles speed, steering, and momentary / constant on / off. Plug-and-play install: connect the pedal cable to the trolling motor's pedal port, mount the pedal to the deck, you're fishing.

Why side-to-side instead of heel-toe?

Side-to-side steering means you tilt the pedal left or right to steer the motor in that direction. Heel-toe (the older cable-steer style) means you rock your foot forward / back to steer. Side-to-side is the modern standard for electric-steer trolling motors - more intuitive ergonomically (boat goes where you tilt the pedal), and fits the electric-steer mechanism naturally. The PowerDrive 70's electric power-steering means the side-to-side action is light and responsive at any motor load.

What does AutoPilot do?

AutoPilot maintains the trolling motor's heading at a chosen direction. Set the heading by pointing the motor where you want to go, tap AutoPilot on, and the motor maintains that heading regardless of wind side-load. Useful for making a long pass over structure or along a shoreline without constantly correcting steering. Tap AutoPilot off to return to manual steering. Important: AutoPilot is direction-hold only, not position-hold. The boat still drifts with current and wind.

Will it fit my boat?

Bolt-on bow-mount installation with the included mount plate. Drill four mount holes through the bow deck according to the supplied template, or use existing trolling motor mount holes if upgrading from a previous Minn Kota. The 60-inch shaft works for boats with about 18-22 inches from the bow deck to the water surface (typical for 19-22 ft bass boats and walleye boats). For lower-bow boats, the shorter 54-inch shaft variant of the PowerDrive may be a better fit.

Is the prop right for weedy water?

The included MKP-37 Power Prop is optimized for open water and normal current, not for heavy weed conditions. For weed-heavy water (lily pads, submerged grass, floating algae), the Weedless Wedge 2 (MKP-33) prop is the better choice. The MKP-33 fits the PowerDrive 70 as a swap-in upgrade and is sold separately. For typical open-water fishing, the included MKP-37 is fine.

Is it saltwater rated?

No. The PowerDrive is the freshwater Minn Kota line. For saltwater, the Riptide PowerDrive is the same motor with saltwater-grade construction. Don't use the freshwater PowerDrive in saltwater - the corrosion will quickly destroy the motor and the warranty doesn't cover saltwater damage.

What's the warranty?

2-year limited motor warranty plus lifetime warranty on the indestructible composite shaft. Service runs through the Minn Kota authorized dealer network in the U.S.
