Lewmar Pro-Fish 1000 Horizontal Windlass Kit - 12V — Product description

The Lewmar Pro-Fish 1000 is the horizontal-mount electric windlass purpose-built for fishermen who anchor over wrecks, ledges, and structure dozens of times in a day. Automatic freefall lets you drop anchor with speed and precision without leaving the helm. 1000 lb max pull, 316 stainless construction, 12V, sized for boats up to 38 feet. Complete kit with breaker, solenoid, and switch.

The Lewmar Pro-Fish 1000 is the horizontal-mount electric windlass aimed specifically at offshore fishermen who use the anchor as a working tool, not a parking brake. The Pro-Fish difference is the automatic freefall mechanism. When you hit the rocker switch to drop anchor, the windlass releases the chain into freefall mode and the anchor goes down at the speed gravity gives it, then the chain pays out from the locker as fast as it needs to. You drop anchor over a wreck or ledge in seconds without idling around above the spot waiting for a slow powered-out windlass. Pull right up over the spot, hit the switch, drop fast and clean, fish it.

The horizontal mounting orientation puts the windlass body above deck, parallel to the deck, with the chain running through a horizontal gypsy. That's the right configuration for boats with limited space below deck for a vertical windlass shaft, and it keeps all the moving parts and electrical components above deck where they're accessible for inspection or service. The Pro-Fish 1000 also installs cleanly at the stern of a boat for Scandinavian-style stern anchoring, which is what some fishermen prefer for working a current-line drift over a wreck.

Construction is 316 stainless steel throughout. The body, the gypsy, the deck plate, the visible hardware, all 316. That's the saltwater-grade alloy that holds up to salt spray and immersion without pitting or stress-corrosion cracking. Lewmar has been making windlasses since 1946 and the 316 standard on this line reflects 75-plus years of marine engineering iteration. The closed-cell neoprene gasket between the windlass body and the deck plate seals the install against water intrusion into the deck and the chain locker below.

Pull capacity is 1000 pounds maximum, with a working load limit of 250 pounds. The maximum pull is what the motor can deliver under stall conditions for short periods. The working load limit is what you should plan to actually pull on a sustained basis without overheating the motor or shortening its life. For a typical 25 to 35 foot fishing boat with a 15 to 25 pound anchor and 100 to 200 feet of chain plus rope rode, the working load is well within the Pro-Fish's continuous capability.

The motor pulls 50 amps under load and runs at 700 watts. 12V DC, the standard for boats under 40 feet. The included 50-amp circuit breaker goes inline at the battery to protect the motor and wiring from overcurrent failure. The dual-direction solenoid handles the up/down switching automatically when you operate the rocker switch.

Maximum line speed is 105 feet per minute, which is fast for a windlass in this class. Combined with the freefall feature on drop, the up-and-down cycle on a typical 60 to 80 foot anchor depth is significantly faster than non-freefall windlasses, which matters when you're fishing multiple spots in a day.

Compatible chain and rope sizing. The Pro-Fish 1000 gypsy is sized for 5/16-inch G4 or BBB chain and 5/8-inch 3-strand or 8-plait rope. The standard combination chain rope rode for boats this size is 30 to 50 feet of chain with rope spliced on for additional scope. The gypsy handles the chain-to-rope transition cleanly with no operator intervention. The Pro-Guard plate at the gypsy entrance prevents the rope from jumping out of the chain wheel during operation, which is the failure mode that takes lesser windlasses out of service in chop.

Manual emergency recovery is built in. If the electrical system fails (dead battery, blown breaker, motor failure), you can manually retrieve the anchor with a standard half-inch socket wrench applied to the recovery shaft. Slow but functional, and meaningful when you're stuck offshore with a dead boat.

Install. Plan a day for a competent boater or boatyard to do the install. The windlass mounts above deck on the bow or stern (your choice for the Pro-Fish's stern-anchoring use case). The chain locker below deck needs to be sized for your full chain and rope load. Cable runs from the battery to the windlass through the boat, with the included circuit breaker at the battery end and the dual-direction solenoid mounted near the windlass for short, fat motor leads. The included rocker switch goes at the helm. The unit is DIY-installable for someone with marine electrical experience, but most owners have a yard do it for warranty and structural alignment reasons.

What's in the box. The windlass itself, the base gasket (closed-cell neoprene), the mounting hardware, the 50-amp circuit breaker, the dual-direction solenoid, the helm rocker switch, and the install manual. Anchor, chain, rope, and the chain-to-rope splice are sold separately because owners spec those to their specific boat and use case.

5-year limited warranty from Lewmar. Same-day shipping before 3 PM ET on in-stock units.

Frequently asked questions

What's the Pro-Fish freefall actually do?

It releases the chain into freefall mode when you hit the drop switch, so the anchor goes down at gravity speed instead of being slowly powered out by the motor. You can pull right up over a wreck or ledge, hit the switch, and the anchor drops fast and clean while you stay at the helm. The fishing-day benefit is that you anchor multiple spots quickly without idling around waiting for slow-deploy windlasses to pay out chain.

What's the difference between maximum pull and working load limit?

Maximum pull (1000 lb on this windlass) is what the motor can deliver under stall conditions for short periods, like breaking an anchor out of a soft bottom. Working load limit (250 lb) is what you should plan to actually pull on a sustained basis without overheating the motor or shortening its life. For typical anchor retrieval where the chain weight plus the anchor weight totals well under 250 lb, you're operating within the working load all day every day.

What size boat is this windlass right for?

Boats up to 38 feet, per Lewmar's spec. That covers most center consoles, walkarounds, sportfishers, and dual consoles in that size range. The pull capacity and gypsy sizing are matched to the anchor and rode that boats of that size typically run. For larger boats over 38 feet, look at the Pro-Fish 1500 or larger Lewmar windlasses with higher capacity.

What chain and rope does it accept?

The gypsy is sized for 5/16 inch G4 or BBB chain and 5/8 inch 3-strand or 8-plait rope. Most owners run a combination rode: 30 to 50 feet of chain at the anchor end with rope spliced on for additional scope. The gypsy handles the chain-to-rope transition cleanly. For boats running all-chain rode (offshore boats with rocky bottoms), the windlass works that way too.

Why horizontal vs vertical mounting?

Horizontal mounts the entire windlass above deck, parallel to the deck, with chain running through a horizontal gypsy. Vertical puts the motor below deck with only the gypsy and shaft above. Horizontal is right when you have limited below-deck space (which is typical on most center consoles and dual consoles), and when you want all the electrical and mechanical components accessible above deck for service. Vertical is right on bigger boats with deep chain lockers and where you want the windlass to take up less above-deck real estate.

Where on the boat should I mount it?

Bow is the typical configuration for primary anchoring. Stern works for Scandinavian-style stern anchoring, which some fishermen prefer for working a current-line drift over a wreck (boat hangs into the current with the anchor at the stern). The Pro-Fish 1000 is specifically designed to support the stern-anchor use case in addition to the standard bow install.

What does the Pro-Guard plate do?

It's the metal plate at the gypsy entrance that prevents the rope from jumping out of the chain wheel during operation. Rope-jump is the failure mode that takes lesser windlasses out of service in chop, where wave action can lift the rope out of the gypsy track and snag the windlass. The Pro-Guard plate keeps the rope captive in the gypsy through the full operating cycle.

Does it have manual recovery if the electrics fail?

Yes. A standard half-inch socket wrench applied to the recovery shaft lets you manually crank the anchor up if the electrical system fails (dead battery, blown breaker, motor failure). It's slow but functional, and it's the kind of feature that matters most exactly when you don't want to need it.

What size circuit breaker do I need?

50 amps, which is what the included circuit breaker is rated for. The motor pulls about 50 amps under load. Mount the breaker at the battery end of the run on the positive lead. Use 4 AWG or larger tinned marine cable for runs up to 25 feet, stepping up to 2 AWG for longer runs to keep voltage drop low (low voltage at the motor reduces pulling power).

Is professional installation required?

Strongly recommended. The windlass mounts through the deck with structural bolts, the chain locker below deck needs to be sized correctly, and the high-current electrical install benefits from a marine electrician's experience. A capable DIY boater can do it, but most owners have a yard do the install for warranty and structural alignment reasons.

How do I match this unit to my boat?

Size by interior volume and insulation: roughly 1,000 BTU per 100 cubic feet for well-insulated cabins, 1,500 BTU for older boats with limited insulation, and bump up further for boats kept in tropical climates or with large glass areas. Confirm the existing AC mounting footprint and ducting layout match before ordering, and verify breaker amperage on the panel side. Your installer can size the system in 15 minutes from boat dimensions and location.

What's the warranty?

5-year limited Lewmar warranty. Service runs through the Lewmar authorized service network in the U.S. Lewmar has been making marine windlasses since 1946 and the support network reflects that long product history.
